Needing to be cautious of his differences, Equality has always been hyper-aware of people like him. He recalls an account from his childhood where he witnessed a man being burned at the stake on pages 51 & 52. This man, who was labeled a Transgressor, had a handsome face and saintly semblance, according to young Equality. He knew this man was unlike many others and felt a connection between the two of them. They both lived with transgressions but alas, they connected on a level where Equality could sense his calmness to a higher degree than others may have been able to. Both Equality and Hamilton house a desire to be brilliant men in a time where there is an abundance of opportunity for change. However, when equality takes the chance to showcase his intelligence to the Council of Scholars, he is met with the response, “How dared you think that your mind held greater than the minds of your brothers” (Rand 71)? Although, like Hamilton, Equality put in copious of work into his efforts, he was met with criticism rather than the praise he expected.

In the song “The Man” by Aloe Blacc, the artist’s lyrics include the explanation of why he is superior to those around him and how everyone should be aware of said fact. In the chorus, he sings about how he’s the man, followed by a sure affirmation. This song, and these lyrics specifically are very telling of how Equality became infatuated himself upon seeing his reflection for the first time on page 80. It is nearly impossible to see thoughts other than ones similar to the song going through Equality’s head as he stares at himself until he no longer can.
