Introduction
The North Carolina controversy that erupted on March 23, 2016, shown the unequal treatment of transgenders in the United States. Pat McCrory, Governor of North Carolina, has denied and fought against the new anti-discrimination bathroom bill, that gives transgenders the right to use the bathroom the person identifies with. People do not understand that there is a difference between sex and gender. Sex is the biological characteristics with which we are born.. Gender refers to learned attitude and behaviors that characterized women and men (page 159). The governor isn’t the only one who disagrees on giving transgenders equal rights, but many Americans disagree with the bathroom bill as well. Many claim that it …show more content…
Functionalism says that society is a complex system of independent parts that work together to ensure a society 's survival ( page 13). We can do this by accepting all people as equals, including transgenders. Society is complex it 's not just male or female, everyone 's gender is constantly changing. Our society will collapse if we do not accept all people as equal, we must work together to obtain and maintain equal rights for all. Herbert Spencer said,“ to survive our vital organs must function together. Similarly, the parts of society, like the parts of the body, work together to maintain the whole structure.”(page 14) You can compare viewing my paper with a functionalist view with a feminist perspective because both are fighting for equal rights.Women and transgenders both get paid less than men, for equal work. The perspective you can contrast with my paper is the conflict theory. 25% of transgenders have lost their jobs, just for being transgender. Transgenders are unequally fighting for the limited resources of jobs in America. You can see this unfair treatment when you look at all the abuse these people …show more content…
All men were created equal, it 's time we act like it. Transgenders are unsafe in our society and will not get better until all states recognize transgenders as citizens of the united states. After researching, I am more informed about the growing problem of mistreatment to transgenders. Using functionalist perspective, made me think about how important we accept these people and all people to advance our society. I recommend for my readers to get more educated in this topic.
