In their work, Felipe and Montalvo discuss situations in which food justice organizations want to improve “diversity” and/or “inclusiveness” of their program. They authors quickly points out that the need to improve diversity reveals that the program currently lacks diversity and is most likely, a predominantly white and heteropatriarchal space. The author’s point that something cannot exist without its opposite reminded me of the philosophical concept of “unity of opposite.” Many consider that one out of the pair is stronger than the other and will eventually dominate. Interestingly, when both of the terms are in balance, there is stasis.…

Privilege, a priceless intangible notion that has categorized individuals as those who have and have not. Being a student at Marquette University has made this problem more evident to me on a day to day basis. Along with being a student, I am also categorized as a minority which in this school means segregation. This in one of the biggest problems that plague the campus because those who are not experiencing this problem, often times believe that it is nonexistent. In reality, racism roams freely throughout the campus and because many like myself have not inherited certain privileges we are treated with a lesser standard.…

My definition for diversity and inclusion are the same as they are in the dictionary. However, when you put them together I believe they have a different meaning entirely. There's a word that I like to use that embodies these two concepts; pastiche. While the actual definition is "an artistic work consisting of a medley of pieces taken from various sources" I see it has a definition of people, individual and conglomerate. Pastiche includes diverse members; it is a piece of art made up of distinct sections that wouldn't be art without every other individual piece.…

Equality means treating everyone the same, and that everyone has the same opportunity to be the best they possibly can e.g. everyone gets education they need to get the career they want. Diversity means a range of difference of things e.g. culture or race. It’s important to promote equality and diversity because everyone can get the same service as the rest, which meets up to their personal needs. This can lead to a decrease of discrimination of others (treating a group of people or an individual differently) and influence others to accept people the way they are. Not treating everyone the same can lead an individual to feel depressed, have a loss of confidence, withdraw themselves from social activities etc.…

We have conversations about diversity and inclusion, we need to add belonging to the dialogue. Just because people who celebrate diverse affinity groups are included doesn't mean they feel welcome or like they belong. Diversity, justice, and sustainability are all intrinsically connected within our lives. In a sort of linear manner, these values all depend on one another in order to come to fruition. In the journal Endgame, Volume 1: The Problem of Civilization, Derrick Jensen sums up the concept of sustainability and justice quite nicely in relation to revolutionizing civilization. He states that “we cannot hope to create a sustainable culture with any but sustainable souls” (Jensen 190). This can be interpreted to mean that without accepting diversity in a justified and conscientious manner, true sustainability can never be reached.…
