“Anthem”, written by Ayn Rand, is a story about Equality 7-2521, and all of his trials in loveless world in which even the words mine and I are forbidden. This world’s technology level has dropped to the point where they use candles instead of light bulbs. Equality 7-2521 discovers a dark tunnel and uses things he has found in it to create a basic light bulb. He wants to show it to the World Council of Scholars, but they don’t accept it. Equality runs away into the forbidden forest with Liberty 5-3000 and find themselves a home beyond the forbidden forest in the mountains. In Ayn Rand’s “Anthem”, Equality’s victory was possible because of the many struggles he didn’t want, realizing that he can make his own decisions, and his determination. Equality does not want to live under collectivism anymore, but he struggles to free himself from it. In this world there are many strict and ridiculous laws that Equality struggles with, “... the law which says that men may not think of women… ” (Rand 41). Equality falls in love with a girl named Liberty 5-3000, but in his thoughts he calls her the Golden One. According to the book, loving a girl is against the law. In the beginning of the book, Equality writes the ‘motto’ every person in this civilization must obey. “We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). Equality has some trouble with this rule. He does not want to be “the great WE,” (Rand 19). He is
