Equality is treating everyone with respect and fairness and recognising a persons’ needs as an individual. It significantly helps those who have a disadvantage of participating in society such as people with a different race, religion, gender, sexuality, age and ability. Equality is largely affected by your status. For example, is you’re married, have a job and you are white you’re considered the ‘norm’ and you are much more likely to be respected in society rather than those who are not married, have no job and are of a different race. This can then lead to discrimination for those who aren’t the ‘norm’ in forms of positive, unfair, direct and indirect discrimination.

This helped to make the laws stronger in some areas, so depending on circumstances the act may help to protect and recognise where people are not being treated equally.
