Equality And Diversity: Is It Important To Promote Equality?

Improved Essays
Equality means treating everyone the same, and that everyone has the same opportunity to be the best they possibly can e.g. everyone gets education they need to get the career they want. Diversity means a range of difference of things e.g. culture or race. It’s important to promote equality and diversity because everyone can get the same service as the rest, which meets up to their personal needs. This can lead to a decrease of discrimination of others (treating a group of people or an individual differently) and influence others to accept people the way they are. Not treating everyone the same can lead an individual to feel depressed, have a loss of confidence, withdraw themselves from social activities etc. These may become severe as discrimination

Equality, to me, is defined as giving everyone an equal opportunity to make something more of them self. It is not a handout of money or material things. Equality is giving all the people the same basic rights with the same opportunities regardless of things such as ethnicity, sex, or religion. Ethnicity has long been an issue of equality in the United States. Though we have come a long way from slavery and things such as the Ku Klux Klan, we still face racial issues and tension today.…

Diversity gives new perspectives on one’s pre-conceived notions. Like traveling, diversity broadens the mind because when one experiences different cultures, one develops a sense or awareness of other people’s way of living in relation to theirs. Diversity does not just bring enhanced awareness to the mind but it also drives for innovation in a competitive or collaborative environment. The reason that we as a country need to promote and celebrate different cultures is because the United States is an exponentially growing ethnically diverse country, and to live peacefully together we must have an accepting sense and understanding of one another. With this reasoning, the same must be implemented in all universities across the United States.…

While I haven’t perhaps let this way of life help promote diversity I know that it has allowed me to see others in a new light. Having always feared judgment on myself and in fact being judged and bullied for the way my family was I would say that this has allowed me to look to better understand others and where they are coming from in all that I do. Today, when I look at someone I don’t just instantly judge and perceive people one way I always strive to get to know people individually and understand their perspectives on life. I realize you can’t judge a book by its cover, it doesn't matter how they appear you can’t see what's going on in their life at first glance. Therefore, you shouldn’t judge people on your perceptions of them, they are…
