The absence of family can negatively influence an individual’s identity. In the book Anthem, the main character Equality 7-2521 never had a family. He lived in such a society where mankind was taught to be alike, that everyone was his family. It was not until he met Liberty 5-3000 (Golden One or Gaea) that he realized what he could be. When they ran off to the house in the Uncharted Forest, Equality says “Gaea is pregnant with my child. Our son will be raised as a man. He will be taught to say ‘I’ and to bear the pride of it. He will be taught to walk straight and on his own feet, He will be taught reverence for his own spirit.” (Rand 100). Equality 7-2521 had a family later in his life, and some people have a family earlier in their lives. This can either positively or negatively affect people. In Helen on 86th Street, the main character Vita participates in the school play. Early on in Vita’s life, though, her father left Vita and her mom. She says, “‘Would Daddy think I was beautiful?’ (Her mother responds) ‘Oh,Vita, he always thought you were beautiful.’ ‘Would he think I was like Helen?’” (Kaufman 7) When people lose a family member, they try to convince them to return. Vita aspired to be Helen to trigger her father’s return, as she thought he’d want to return to a “beautiful” and “Helen-like” daughter.
