'Equality 7-2521: Prometheus'

Imagine living in a world where an individual’s one and only purpose to live is to serve his fellow brethren and the society in which he or she lives in. There is no man or woman greater or less than another man or woman. Everyone is the same, and everyone is equal. In this world, society is controlled to make sure no one has a chance to stand out as an individual. This is the world that Equality 7-2521 lived in. After a few years of living for his brothers as a street sweeper, Equality 7-2521 found an underground tunnel. Within this underground tunnel, Equality 7-2521 wrote, thought, and performed scientific experiments he always wanted to do (which was forbidden) and was ultimately free from the company of others. From this point on, Equality 7-2521’s care for the “good” of his brothers lessened while the “good” for himself grew. After major events unfolded against him, …show more content…
This is what inevitably pushed Equality 7-2521 into becoming “Prometheus”. Equality 7-2521 changes from being a collectivist, who was focused on the group’s well-being, to doing actions for himself and ultimately ignoring the group.

As someone grows and matures, one starts to realize their strengths, weaknesses, and gifts. Equality 7-2521 on the other hand, believed and thought only one thing of himself. That he was “cursed”. From a young age, Equality 7-2521 would fight with other boys at the Home of the Students and because of this, was viewed as a troublesome child. To make matters worse for Equality 7-2521, he was disliked by his teachers simply for being much smarter than the other children and for asking questions out of curiosity which his teachers heavily disliked and did not allow. Unfortunately for Equality 7-2521, it did not end there. Equality 7-2521 was also scolded often by the authorities just because he was taller than the others. In a society where individualism was rejected and

While Equality 7-2521 knows his invention will benefit mankind, he did not intend for it's purpose to be that. His primary motivation is the need to prove that he is the greatest of the people, who contributed even as a measly street sweeper. Equality should be motivated this way, because in a world where everyone is limited in their thinking to benefit man collectively, Equality has no such burden. Throughout "Anthem" it shows that when the scholars have had the mindset of collectively helping mankind advance, they are then limited and refuse to accept more radical idea's. However, through history the theory is often shown that when countries advance in technology and new inventions the primary motivation is greed.…

This world would function as a “hive mind” similar to how worker bees fend for a hive and give their lives for something they most likely cannot comprehend. The collective whole would be the center of life for anyone in such a world, making it blasphemy for someone to accomplish something alone or feel displeased with something trivial such as a job assignment. This justifies Equality 7-2521's treatment where he had been called a “sin” for having such an abundance of unique traits, making him an incredible outlier and further distancing him from the community. Having outliers in such a society allows people to question their abilities and those around them, leaving room for free-thought and egos to form. Therefore, Equality’s treatment makes perfect sense in the eyes of any government official, where elimination of him would cause almost no effect on the current…

Sometimes Rules Are Evil “Some rules are nothing but old habits that people are afraid to change”(Therese Fowler). In Anthem, Equality 7-2521 feels that he has to follow the guidelines of his collectivist society. However, towards the end, Equality becomes dynamic and no longer thinks about following society’s rules. Equality’s eventual assessment of his sins is correct because he should be allowed to enjoy some very basic rights such as thinking and writing by himself, talking and loving any girl he wants, and be allowed to have friendships with anyone he likes. Those are basic rights that should be available to all people under any circumstances.…

Then, he was put with the rest of the children his age at the Home of Students. This is where a lot of his conflict with his community and the rules started to happen.
