INTRODUCTION: The Equal pay act prohibits pay discrimination based on sex, but is it limited to pay discrimination between employees who are performing the same job at the same location. HISTORY: The Equal pay act of 1963prohibits federal agencies from paying employees of one sex lower wages than those of the opposite sex for performing substantially equal work. It was signed into the law June 10th 1963 by John F. Kennedy as part as his new frontier program. To prohibit discrimination on account of sex in the payment of wages by employers engaged in commerce or in the production of goods of commerce. PHILOSOPHICAL AND THEORETICAL HISTORY: JFK singed the equal pay act into law. It prevent the discrimination of payments of benefits/wages based on gender. It amends the fair labor standards act. 24% of women were in the workforce in the first decade of the 21st century. The congress hereby finds that the extended industries engaged in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce of wage differentials based on sex.
-Depresse wages and living standards for employees necessary for their health and efficiency -Prevents the maximum utilization of the available labor
-Tends to cause laor disputs there by burdening affecting and obstructing commerce
-Burdens commerce and the free flow of goods in commerce
-Constitutes an unfair method of competition
