Sara Mosle and Robert Coles are two individuals who become exposed to volunteerism because of specific circumstances yet they also encounter issues of extraordinary mismatch throughout their work. The term “mismatch,” has been applied to biological, psychological and social settings; regardless of the scenario, the outcomes of a mismatch can potentially do more harm than good. Mosle, a middle-aged white woman and journalist residing in a well off neighborhood in New york, becomes a mentor for several children from low-income communities. Coles, a white psychiatrist, pursues an in-depth study of school desegregation through observations of black youth organizations during the Civil Rights era. In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

In “Volunteering Required,” Loretta Van Lear argues that it is necessary for the students to be required their volunteer careers in the majors or fields before starting college programs associated with those fields. Volunteer Hours Today Jenna and I volunteered at the Oxford-Lafayette Humane Society. We spent three hours walking the dogs and playing with the kittens. At first I was hesitant to spend three hours at the humane society, but the time went by faster than I had assumed. The first place I went in the shelter was the older dog room, and instantly I was taken aback by how many dogs there were. There was this one older dog snuggled up in the back of the kennel, it had the most depressing look on its face and all I wanted to do was hug it…

In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

I just utilize every hour in my free time to provide unconditional servitude to my peers, school, and the community. I really enjoy helping out at my school’s graduation because I get to see my upperclassman friends graduate and to give many of the parents, a memorable day. Similarly, I take in a great delight when I get to be a tour guide for the freshman at the orientation to reveal how great is Belchertown High School and encourage to get involve and don’t be shy to serve our school and the community. I really believe teaching the younger kids to serve and go beyond is important because they don’t understand the importance of serving usually. In this case, I decided to share my experience of selfless service to the public to them and encourage the freshman to serve and give back to the…

On December 6,1865,President Lincoln abated slavery stating that all slaves would be freed and no longer be forced to work for no reward. In our own country today, however, many students across the nation are being forced to do just that, work for no reward. In the article “Required Volunteerism;School Program Tested” by Michael Winerip, It shows that in just two schools alone,175 students are at risk of not graduating because they did not give in to the volunteer program. Didn’t we learn from our mistakes; just because we changed the name, doesn’t mean we changed the game! Volunteering is to go out of your way to help others, but this is just doing what’s required, and therefore, the practice of making kids volunteer for a grade should be stopped.…

Since college students are well suited for community service, by doing community services, they can "create...a lifelong commitment to volunteering. " They can also start "addressing the needs of those around them" because by doing that, they can help their community become better than it was before. Although performing community service can be helpful towards the individual themself and to those who live in the community, young people shouldn't be required to perform public services. Young people should not be forced to complete something that they do not want to do. Nobody wants to recieve "community service from someone who is forced to serve" because it does not give a good feeling to what they are doing.…

I am continuing my volunteer work at the Grace Resources Center to serve the homeless by helping with the Emergency Grocery Program and Hot Meals Program. Additionally, I am currently enrolled in a Certified Nurse Assistant training program at St. Joseph’s Nursing School. After completing the program in August, I plan to work full-time while continuing my volunteer work. In the program, some of the things I am learning are the foundations of resident care, personal care and rehabilitation and restorative care skills which will allow me to learn how to deliver patient care. Being a Certified Nurse Assistant would enable me to gain clinical skills, to learn how to deliver quality patient care and to practice holistic care principles.…

I have been a Boy Scout for roughly seven years back in my home country. Throughout those years, I have gained a lot of experiences and skills to apply for my future. I recalled there is a rule in the Scout guidebook stated that a Boy Scout is always willing to help any person in need in any circumstances. I have always been applying this rule into my life and it is the main reason why I love volunteering. This rule plus my love in photography, I have volunteered in many charity events, hosted by the Foundation for Disabled Children in Vietnam, as the event photographer to bring awareness to many people.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them.
