The frame narrative style structure that Yu Hua uses in To Live shows the reader the end of Fugui’s story and shows that eventually Fugui makes his way up the hierarchy and becomes an ox. Early in the book it is revealed that Fugui will eventually have an ox and be alone on a farm. This foreshadows his growth as a person that comes later as the narrator continues to listen to Fugui’s story. With each break into the present, the narrator notices how much Fugui resembles his ox of the same name. The narrator notes that Fugui’s pants “looked just like the skin on the ox’s stomach” (87).…

On Wednesday April 27, 2016 at approximately 8:50 A.M. I arrived with another online student, Sarah Johnson, at the Allegany County Circuit Court at the address of 30 Washington Street, Cumberland MD, 21502. The judge for that morning was W. Timothy Finan. Upon entering the front door, you had to put all of your stuff in tubs that they ran through the security scanner; while they were doing that, you walked through a scanner as well. On the other side you reclaimed your items. The security officer then directed us upstairs to the second court room.…

In the memoir, the “Reading Like A Writer,” activity helped tremendously. The imaging exercises we performed in the class went a long way to brainstorming an idea about what to write about. Choosing a part was hard, but when I started, the story came out smoothly. I can now imagine myself in the audience’s shoes while reading a paper. The compare/contrast essay was a little difficult because I didn’t know what to write about.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…
