Epilogue To Zara's Mistake

Improved Essays
Loud screaming slowly brought Zara out of her deep slumber and she opened her eyes slowly, her hand reaching up to hold her head as a throbbing pain in her head surfaced.

"Zara? You're awake?"

Zara recognised the voice almost immediately. It was Zaheer.

Her head snapped to him and she took in the sight of the room. Zaheer, Meesha, her parents and Aamir's family were all crowded around the bed, looking down at her worryingly.

She tried to pull herself to a sitting position but Zaheer gently pushed her back by her shoulders.

"You'll hurt yourself." He smiled.

Zara almost laughed at the irony but Zaheer getting tackled to the floor forced her to push out a scream instead.

Aamir immediately climbed over him and started to punch him

She did not want to cry in front of everyone but after finally hearing care in her father's voice after so long, she could not help to be emotional.

"Zara." Her mother rushed forward to her bedside. "I know we made a mistake but-"

"A mistake?" Zara questioned incredulously.

"We should have believed you."

Zara did not say anything, pushing her mother to continue.

"We love you Zara. We just never thought someone would lie on the Quran. We made a mistake. Please forgive us."

"You're forgiven."

"What?" Zara's mother had hoped to hear these words, but they did not sound sincere or like they were coming from her daughter at all. Her words were robotic.

"I forgive you. I have had enough of this anger and this hatred. I just want it to end."

"So you'll come home with us?" Zara's father asked hopefully.

Zara shook her head sadly.

"I forgave you, but I did not forget. It's not possible for me to forget what you did. You disowned me, when I needed you the most. Despite all the chaos and Aamir's beatings that left me bruised and scarred, I'll never forget that you two abandoned me. Your and mother's scars were left on the inside. You knew me. You knew I would never do anything like that. You were supposed to have faith in me... but you

By the way your boyfriend looks at her, he will take her to be his own in no time. You're not jealous?"

Aamir had no time to react as Meesha looked at him straight in the eye and slapped him.

It stung, but it did not hurt as much as it angered him.

He almost reached out and strangled the dirty woman in front of him who did not know her place but he was distracted when he saw Zaheer about to lift Zara from her bed.

"Zara, if you go with them, I will destroy him."

That caught Zara's attention and her head snapped to him, her eyes wide.

"I can do it. Destroy his company and leave him homeless and bankrupt."

Zara's eyes started to tear in hopelessness as she realised he was right.

"You wouldn't-"

"I would." He sat down on the dressing chair smugly.

"They've helped you so much, Zara. Won't you return the favour? Leave me and I'll put them on the streets."

"Zara we'll be fine." Zaheer shook his head, even though inwardly fear had started to build in his chest. "He can't-"

"You know very well that I have the power and the money to do so." Aamir bit back, before returning his gaze to

It gets stupidly hot in Danielsville, Louisiana, especially around summer. This would be fine I guess if we had something to do, to keep our mind off of the heat but there isn’t anything to do. Danielsville, Louisiana has three churches (Pentecostal), twice as many bars, one high school and no books stores or libraries. This means you’re either too drunk to read, or too Christian to read anything good. Big enough to have a mayor’s house, but not big enough to be on any map of any kind, it’s the kind of town where everyone knows your name and basically everything about you.…

The last vestiges of fall had passed and only brown, shriveled leaves remained on the sidewalk. Trees appeared naked, shivering without their blanket of color. Cold air blew through their skinny, lifeless branches, tossing the trees around as though they were mere sticks rather than giants. She shuddered as the chilly wind kissed her brow, leaving a wretched disease of ice and sorrow in its wake. Within this wintry prison there was no joy, there was no warmth, and, above all, there was no diversity.…
