Epilogue To The Giver

Jonas and Fiona biked to the House of Old together and waved to each other as they were both heading their own ways for their training. He entered the Annex, greeted the Attendant and went inside The Giver’s room. He walked toward The Giver who was sitting on the chair waiting for Jonas. As he was walking the books caught his attention again, and he suddenly stopped and just stared in awe with the memory of his first time seeing all these books playing like a movie in his head. He looked in awe as he saw all the walls covered with so many books that they reached all the way up to the ceiling. He still wondered if there were so many rules in the community. The Giver then stood up, walked up to Jonas and quietly said, “I think I know what your …show more content…
At first, it felt like nothing was happening because his hands felt wrinkly and uneven. After a while it was as if a light brush of heat was radiating through his hands and the touch of his hands faded away. Jonas then realized that he was no longer on the bed but considerably a massive room standing in the main aisle on a wide, velvet red carpet. Jonas gasped as he was astonished by this strange place. He looked up and saw the ceiling was made of dark wooden arches and it stretched so high it almost looked as if it’d go on forever. On each corner, there were tall, antique spiral staircases that stretched to the ceiling. Everywhere Jonas looked he saw bookcases filled with thousands of books. The feeling of being overwhelmed flushed him as he stared in disbelief. The silence filled his ears and the smell of old books prickled his nose. Jonas walked around the big room exploring this unusual …show more content…
Some books were old, and others were new. The old books felt rough with splinters popping out and the newer books felt a little smoother. Some books were thick with hundreds of pages and others were thin with fewer pages. If he only looked at the shelves, he could see the dust shimmering in the light coming through the large windows. It felt as if he’d been walking for hours but he knew only five minutes had passed by. He went down to the first floor and saw a pile of books laid on a small wooden table and beside it was a chair with dark wooden legs and a black leather seat. He walked there and took a seat on the chair and picked up the first book to read. He was fascinated! He never read anything other than the book of community volume. What he had read hadn’t been any rules in the community but a fantasy book about mythical creatures with fairies, elves and unicorns. When he was done he could barely think properly. Thousands of thoughts raced through his head all at once for he has never experienced this before. He then decided to read the rest of the books and even though a few minutes passed by it was as if he’d been reading for hours. While he was reading Jonas felt like he was in another world where he was living the stories and the outside world didn’t exist. He was so caught up in reading that he forgot that this was simply a memory until he was done reading the pile of books. He’d been

“Let me out please, if this is The Giver or anyone in the community that found out about my escape I’m really sorry now just please I’ll do anything just let me-”, Jonas squealed as someone rapidly pulled him out of the dirty sack into what seemed like a plane. “Where am I”, Jonas was speechless as he glanced around at what he was being transported with but was more speechless when he realised who dragged him out, it was The Giver. “Hello Jonas, it’s time I tell you everything about the real world and the community”, The Giver replied nonchalantly. “Jonas you are currently in a plane right now due to what's happened in the community, absolute chaos, with no receiver of memories now all of my powers have now been transferred to everybody else and I don't feel in control anymore ”, The Giver states in a upsetting tone.…

While Jonas lived in a community where knowledge about the world was hidden, in “Examination Day”, it was a society in which knowing more costs your life. The community of The Giver did not ever provide the opportunity of learning the truth, as children were ‘contained’ from their birth. Jonas did not want to keep in the knowledge as Receiver of Memories because he was overjoyed by feelings. One of Jonas’ rules “Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and Elders” (Lowry 86). This is meaningful because the communities’ only goal of a Receiver was to prevent information from leaking out to the community.…

As the snow covered sled reached the bottom of the hill, the music grew louder, louder, louder, until he was sure that it wasn't an echo. Jonas transferred the last memory of warmth to Gabriel, and once again the flakes of heat began to travel across his frozen skin. Mustering up all his strength, Jonas lifted Gabe's frail body into his cold hands and pushed himself off the frozen sled. He trudged through the snow, Gabriel in his arms, and came to the first doorstep. He collapsed on the door, making a startling noise ring throughout the dwelling.…

For The Giver, it was Rosemary and Jonas, while for Jonas, it was for Gabriel, Fiona, Asher, and The Giver. Jonas feels that love makes everything seem more complete, which he realizes after The Giver gives him his favorite memory, of a loving family celebrating a holiday, Christmas. These feelings of love and shared memories allow Jonas and The Giver to be selfless, and to sacrifice themselves to save the others in the entire community, thus creating the utopian society the Elders were hoping for all along. But, this is not the utopia the Elders had imagined for themselves. This utopian world is one of love.…

It was a little cold, but not unbearably so; candles in brass brackets lined the walls on either side to light the way. The air was rather stale and smelt a little musty - almost like a library that is filled with old books, but not quite. The passage itself was long, straight and narrow; it was wide enough, he thought, only for two people, who would still be forced to walk very close together. He closed is eyes, fully expecting another change of scene, yet there was nothing. The sound of his feet on the stones continued to echo down the passage.…

The Giver then informed him that people might make the wrong decision if they were given choices. Jonas then began to feel compassion towards his community, which one cannot feel without love, because they would never know what it felt like to make their own choices in their everyday life. He “tried to give his new awareness to his friends” (Lowry 99) by putting his hand on their shoulder and trying to allow them the ability to see colors hoping that it would make them aware that there is a whole world with choices that they have yet to discover. Without the love that he acquired through his training Jonas would not have the compassion for his friends and his community that he…
