1. In the middle of a dark and dreary night
I had been reading many forgotten novels
But as my sleep was almost upon me, there was a knocking at my door.
As I went to open the door, I said to myself, “A visitor at this late hour?” I said only this, but nothing more.
2. I specifically remember this depressing December night.
The ashes from a fire that had been burning took their place on my floor
And I eagerly wished tomorrow would come and I sought my books to find Relief from my sorrows of losing my dear Lenore.

3. As my purple curtains rustled, my soul felt thrilled with exciting terrors.
To calm my rapidly beating heart, I repeated, “It is just a visitor knocking at the door.” It is just a visitor and nothing more.

4. By now, my soul was growing stronger and I was hesitating no longer.

5. I stood there a long time peering, wondering, and fearing what I might see.
And still, the silence and stillness was never broken.
The only word I had spoken was, “Lenore?”
And that word was echoed back to me.
“Lenore!”

6. As I was turning back into my room, I could feel my entire soul just burning
And soon enough, I heard the knocking once again, but it sounded louder.
I said to myself, “Obviously, there must be something at my window.”
Let me see what is there. I will stay calm and see what all the mystery is.
I am sure it is nothing more than the wind.
7. As I opened the shudder, there was a sort of flutter
As a magnificently impressive Raven stepped into my house.
It sat on a bust of Athena above my door with the demeanor of a god or goddess.
It did nothing more than perch and sit.

8. Then, the bird charmed my sadness into a smile
