Epilepsy Disease is a brain disorder. Clusters of nerve cells in the brain signal abnormally. The normal pattern of neuronal activity is disturbed. It causes strange sensations, emotions, and behavior. Sometimes it causes convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. Epilepsy is not contagious or caused by a mental illness or mental retardation. It cannot be cured, but can eventually go away on its own in some people. It may develop because of an abnormality in the brain wiring, an imbalance of nerve signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters.
