They were able to ask sensitive questions on sexual behavior that used audio and a computer self-interview. A total of 8,827 persons age 14-39 were interviewed. Out of that number 8,536 were examined and 8,330 provided a urine sample. The overall prevalence of chlamydia was 1.7%, showing there are approximately 1.8 million infected with the disease nationally. There are several actions that can be implemented in Monroe County to reduce this statistic. Proper education, screening and partner treatment. Proper education is very important to reduce the patients that come in contact with chlamydia. This is a public health concern and most people do not want to discuss the impact that it has on individuals and the community. Most people are not educated enough about this preventable disease. Patients that come in the clinic that are at high risk, or that engage in sexual activity will be provided with free education. This education will give a detailed description of the disease and the consequences of not being diagnosed. It will also promote protection by using condoms. This will help protect the patient from STI’s and other communicable diseases. Along with education patient’s also need to be screened for chlamydia. Patients under the age of 25 will be tested annually for chlamydia. This will help screen those patients that are at risk and treat the patient that has no apparent symptoms. Treatment early on will help reduce the damage that chlamydia can cause to men, women and unborn children. This will be beneficial in the long run. Most adolescence do not think of the future. They are focused on the here and now. If treatment is delayed then it could impact their lives in the future.
