In this handbook, he teaches us to learn how to live as a philosopher and how to be a philosopher. We learn how to be an overall good person, ideally. Epictetus wants us to live our life the best way we can. “Do not demand that things should happen just as you wish, but wish them to happen just as they do, and all will be well.” (Page 521, Epictetus.) We have limits within life but does not mean it is all bad, it is a good way to examine yourself. You do what you can within your own power. No one can harm you without your permission. “Accordingly, if someone holds a false opinion, because this is the person who has been deceived, it is they who suffer the harm.” (Page 528.) You have no control over how other people perceive you. You learn how to apply your mind to the situation. Other’s thoughts of you can help rid the evil within you. We should make the effort to make ourselves better. We aren’t responsible for how a person thinks of themselves, we can only help awaken the desire.
