Beowulf is a great epic that took place in the Anglo Saxon time period. From the start of time, the battle between good and evil has been dated. Beowulf faces three main battles in the epic Beowulf. One battle was against Grendel and another, Grendel’s mother. The reasons behind these battles were good versus evil. Within the characters of this epic, are many mythical elements. In this epic, Beowulf is considered an embodiment of the best the race can produce while Grendel and Grendel’s mother are considered the destructive forces of nature. Beowulf is the best and strongest of all the warriors. He is considered a great man and the hero of the people. He is represented as the best the race can produce in the epic Beowulf because of his splendid …show more content…
She was not as powerful as Grendel, but she was still strong. As with Grendel, no warrior would take on a battle with Grendel’s mother alone. After Grendel’s death, his mother came to Heorot Hall to seek revenge for the murder of her son. She killed a fellow warrior, who happened to be “…Hrothgar’s closest friend” (Beowulf, Collections. l. 414). Although she did kill the warrior, she was not like her son who killed for fun. Evil indeed, but her intentions were only to seek revenge. After this event at Heorot Hall, a fight broke out between Beowulf and Grendel’s mother at her home underneath the swamp. This, again, was a fight between good and evil. In the end, good overcame evil when Beowulf defeated and killed Grendel’s mother. Throughout the epic Beowulf, good against evil took place many times. Beowulf won his battles by using his mythical element, which was strength, for the good. Grendel and his mother tried to overcome good by killing the warriors and battling against Beowulf. Beowulf represented an embodiment of the best race can produce while Grendel and his mother were represented as destructive forces of nature. Good got a victory over evil in both
