“The man whose name was known for courage” (340). This line in Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf, fully elucidated what Beowulf had to possess to succeed. After making the decision to help the Danes in their troubles, Beowulf is faced with the responsibility of defeating Grendel, his mother, and a dragon. These adventures proved not only Beowulf’s heroicness, but also his courage. He faces threats, but through a series of events, he learns to apprehend the benefits of having fearlessness. Beowulf has to use courage to thrive in every situation he is presented with or consequences may arise. Imagine facing a challenge with no warning of what was ahead. Whether it is an opinion, law, person, thought, etc., they sense that they will lose the battle. Beowulf did the opposite of this, as “he was sad at heart, / unsettled yet ready, sensing his death. / His fate hovered near… / it would soon claim his coffered soul,” (2419-2423). In this portion of the story, Beowulf and his 11 “worthy” warriors have arrived to the dragon’s lair. They are about to fight the dragon that has been causing much terror and mayhem in their land. Beowulf is foreshadowing his fate and, even though he knows it’s dangerous, is still willing to trudge on through. Beowulf realizes that the dragon is more powerful than he is, but he will not back down. He is willing to run against the odds and possibly risk his life in the process. This really explains how true Beowulf’s bravery was because he did not give up to a more potent foe. He was courageous because he knew that if he did not do this, people would see him as a coward.
