“Everyone dies. Those who seek greatness must die honorably in the midst battle. Now, we should look at the tracks Grendel’s mother left behind. I promise to find and fight her,” exclaimed Beowulf. King Hrothgar thanked the Lord for Beowulf’s brave words. Riding a horse, Hrothgar led the warriors through tight paths and over tall hills. They passed by the homes of water monsters until they found the entrance to Grendel’s mother’s den. The warriors found Aeschere’s head alongside this lake, where bloody water boiled. Many sea monsters swam beneath the surface of the lake. Some even sat along the cliffs above the lake. When one of the warriors sounded a battle horn, all of the monsters went to hide. When a Geatish warrior decided to strike and kill one of the monsters with an arrow, the waves brought its body ashore giving the men time to examine it. Beowulf began to prepare himself for battle. Then, Beowulf drove into the water of the bloody lake. It took him many hours to reach the bottom and when he did Grendel’s mother grabbed him and brought him to her den. She could not hurt him because his chain mail was very strong. Beowulf found himself in an enemy hall, free of rushing water. Ready to complete his mission, Beowulf struck Grendel’s mother with Hrunting, the sword. Unfortunately, it did no harm to the monster. Beowulf threw the sword to the side, trusting that he would be able to fight the monster with his own two hands. He grabbed her and threw her to the ground, but she fought back. Beowulf’s distinguished bravery sets him apart from most leading characters because of his acceptance of death and fate. He would lay his life down on the line to save his people from a threatening creature and he would not have to think twice about it. For example, when asked by Hrothgar to save his citizens from Grendel’s mother, Beowulf replies with “And if your enemy should end my life Then be, O generous prince, forever The father and protector of all whom I leave Behind me, here in your hands, my beloved Comrades left with no leader, their leader Dead” (Beowulf 452-457). In this quotation, Beowulf is advising Hrothgar that if he is to pass away while attempting to defeat Grendel’s mother and save the day, that Hrothgar must watch over Beowulf’s men and protect them since their leader will be gone. Beowulf is stating that he does not mind if he dies however, he only cares about the well-being of his men and wants them to be accounted for if he were to perish.…
