Esperanza got off the train and it was time to head to the immigration officials. Esperanza’s experience going through immigration was frightening, some people got pushed onto a train that went back to Mexico and the others got shuffled into a train that went to California, there was no way of telling which train was which until it got to your destination. Thinking she was going to get sent away from her mother was not pleasing in Esperanza’s case. When Esperanza got off the train she found every one she had been with since leaving the first train. Esperanza met people on the train that she did not know she would relate to later in the book. When I reached the end of the book I had to take a second look at the previous chapter where she meets Carmen, a woman who gave Esperanza’s mother two chickens in an old shopping bag that she tied with string while saying, “For your future.”(78)Carmen was a lady with kids and she had very little money and very little things that she owned but Carmen still gave Esperanza’s mom chickens after her mother gave her three beautiful lace carpetas.
