Envy
Last semester in my reading class, my professor asked if one of us would like to share something we had written in our journal from spring break. No one wanted to until one student raised her hand and said, “I’ll read mine.” The student essay jarred us into wakefulness. She described her trip to Cuba with personal encounters and she would read the essay as if every word mattered. I turned around and could tell that others students were stunned as I was. The way she wrote her essay and describe it gave all the students envy. More than any of the other deadly sins, Americans today are guilty of envy. Envy takes place in movies, books, and in society. Envy is a feeling of discontent

The National Honor Society is an organization that acknowledges and congratulates students with high educational standings and certain characteristics. NHS looks for people with traits such as leadership, people who are outgoing in their community, and people with a great quality of character. If I am selected to be in this group, I would contribute to the growth of NHS by spreading information about what NHS is to other students and teachers. Before I got this application, I didn’t even know what NHS was and what you do once you are in it. I want other people to know the importance of this group and how it can look good not just for when you apply to colleges, but to yourself as well.…

For two weeks, I stayed in Charleston, South Carolina. I didn’t know much about the place, except that I referred to it as an army town because that’s where my sister and her husband, who was in the military, stayed. I was reluctant to go, but Charleston had a lot to offer me; a new change of pace and some new scenery was much more satisfying than spending the two weeks stuck in Iowa doing the same old routine. The weather was mystical in Charleston.…

Now consider your goal, survival, and if possible, economic stability. You will need to raise as much money as possible to achieve the second goal, not just for basic needs, but leftover as well for clothing and the necessities for having a basic job. In “Self-Reliance” by Ralph Waldo Emerson, he presents ideas that can still be useful to people today. Emerson speaks about the notion of how people should determine their own fate rather than permitting society to decide. Here is an example of this notion, “There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide…” (page 93). In this quote, Emerson is saying that there comes a time in everybody’s life when they realize that by imitating others they are sacrificing their own individuality.…

Understanding Envy The Definition of Envy According to Smith and Kim (2007), envy is “an unpleasant, often painful emotion characterized by feelings of inferiority, hostility, and resentment caused by an awareness of a desired attribute enjoyed by another person or group of persons” (p. 46). As said by Kant (1780/1997), what lies at the foundation of envy is the comparison of oneself to a better performing person. At the idea of envy, it is not the pain that occurs when other people excel in a particular activity or in a possession of a better physical attribute, but rather, it is the pain that occurs when someone is superior to self. At some other research (van de Ven, Zeelenberg, & Pieters, 2009), envious feelings are sometimes linked to…
