First Circle Missionary Parents. The one security question I never use is what is the name of your middle school (in my case primary school). This was because I went to fifteen of them. My parents decided to live in Jos, Plateau State (Nigeria), this was the state where the Boko Haram riots started. Before I got called to complete my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), I decided to volunteer at the Air Force Hospital. That experience was eye opening for me, whenever I had to chance to talk to patients and ask them why they didn’t use inexpensive methods to help them avoid infectious diseases the response was they had no knowledge of such methods. I wanted to know why these communities were not taught these methods, especially with the unrest due to the riots. That was my introduction to public health.
I was posted to serve at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Working for NAFDAC showed me another side of public health that dealt with the polices and regulations that protected our food and drugs as a nation. Vaccinations can be viewed as a blessing or a curse, but it is difficult to see the beauty of a blessing when the devil of fear controls the mind. In On Immunity by Eula Biss, fear is a major theme that seems to present itself constantly throughout the book. The fears presented with the risks of vaccinations, the filth theory and the necessity to trust others, are common societal fear that Biss is able to dwindle. In doing so, an attempt is made to allow for a clearer thought process when making the life or death decisions about getting a vaccination.…

Epidemics such as Black Death and Cholera have significantly changed the way public health operates in modern society. Many of the ideas developed during the black death years has been transformed and underwent multiple progressions in order to assist the greater good and potential of society. However, there have also been many similarities and old age ideologies that have stuck around and shaped our practices as well. Moreover, it is imperative that one knows the social, political, and cultural practices that were in place during both epidemics. Leading to the point, changes in public health were informed by transformations of the role of religion and the increasing influence of sanitation.…

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are conditions in the environment where people live, learn, work and play, affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. These conditions are determined largely by their social, economic, physical environment and one’s individual characteristics (CDC, 2015). To a large extent, factors such as where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, behavior, lifestyle, our income, and our relationship with friends and family, have considerable impact on health. Poverty, one of the nation’s most intransigent social problems, continues to contribute to multiple health outcomes through a variety of pathways which includes reduced social standing and limited access to healthy food, health services and a safe…

During my recent holiday to India I witnessed the traumatising effects of life threatening diseases such as malaria and typhoid. This made me curious to discover how doctors treated these illnesses. Seeing these conditions helped me realise how challenging medicine can be and the importance of interacting with people in the community to support them. Learning about fertilisation, in Biology and having attended a Robert Winston lecture on ‘Reproduction and Genetics’ have increased my knowledge of the constant development within the medical field. Studying Chemistry in addition to this has helped me to appreciate the biochemical underpinnings of molecular and cellular processes that play a great role in development of diseases and treatments.…

This question is brutally honest, there have been problems with undernourishment and sewage for years, but just one case of polio causes a full investigation. While reading this section, I could relate to the standpoint of the villagers and from the standpoint of Dr. Pankaj. I felt this way because I too would get upset if more measures and infrastructure were not being set in place to prevent the further spread of polio, but from the viewpoint of Dr. Pankaj I feel that eradicating and vaccinating every child would be better for the community. This challenge is something that I could face, if I decide to get involved with global health initiatives outside of the United States. My views have been changed in for the better.…

As such I see preventative medicine as means for improving overall health conditions and reducing those obstacles or hindrances that may pose as a barrier towards obtaining health or health related services. The passing of my grandmother in Nigeria while trying to obtain life saving yet simple equipment, gave me a real life view of the problems faced by communities with significant health care needs but with limited access to healthcare services or resources. I see preventative medicine as a medium for helping me to develop and guide my strong interest in international health thus allowing me to create sustainable health initiatives in underserved areas both locally and globally. I am also interested in developing ways to improve health literacy throughout various communities.…
