This may cause death to those people who are especially impoverished. It is said that China has gone through a series of famine in one millennium. One famine killed around 9 to 13 million people as well as affecting 50,000 square miles of the land. This was evident also in the novel, when there was famine in the first chapters of the story. Many in the village near Wang Lung were starving as well as his own family while the Hwangs still had a lot of money and spend in on vices. This meant that the economy was also affected due to the environmental changes that are happening. The more crops that are affected, the demand for the food goes up as well as its price due to its scarcity. Since a lot of people were farmers during the 1900s, they also depended on their crops for a living. They used the crops that they harvest to buy different goods such as clothing and different types of food. Farmers of rice try to adjust their practices so that they would still have the means to survive even during the extreme weather that they are experiencing. They know that the drought and flood may affect the number of rice that they harvest because they know these environmental changes can destroy these. Farmers can think of several measures in order to solve this problem. There are physical and non-physical means. In physical means, farmers may try to invest in getting new equipment that would help them irrigate their fields better so that the drought may bring minimal damages to their crops. They can also repair their current irrigation facilities too if they don’t have the resources to buy a new and better one to still try and decrease the effects that is brought by the extreme weather changes. For the non-physical means, farmers can learn new ways on how to properly manage their crops at times like these. They can also try to get insurance, which is now applicable in modern times.
