Global Warming: The Commercial Impact Of Climate Change

Superior Essays
Our environment is vital for providing priceless resources like energy, water and food. As humanity has expanded so has the demand for resources. In order for the Earth to sustain us, it needs three essential things: healthy plant life, temperature regulation and atmospheric regulation. Throughout human history, we have relied on these processes to function. This is not a perfect world; however, one can only take and use so much without there being an impact.
Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been abusing resources and polluting the environment mindlessly and it has had a serious effect: global warming. Global warming, defined as: “the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth 's atmosphere generally attributed to

This will continue to climb, reaching as high as $91 billion dollars per year by 2050. For example, rising ocean temperatures on Canada’s West Coast have dramatically reduced the local salmon species, an important component of the coast’s economy. This is just one example of the commercial impact of climate change. Some of which include: Timber supply impact, flooding damage and poorer air quality. All of these will result in major profit loss for practically any primary or secondary industry. So then what does the government do? Combatting the economic blusters beforehand is key. If Canada can prevent climate change from taking it’ toll as a preventative, then possibly we can save billions of dollars before it is too late. The Government of Canada has become cautious of the economic disaster that climate change could bring. So following this new agenda, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently attended the Paris Climate Conference on December 21, 2015. All of the 196 attending countries came to a consensus to reduce emissions, and prevent World temperatures from increasing over 2 degrees on average. This is a good first step, however we also need to increase our knowledge of climate change, adapt our policies and finally yet importantly forge a strong understanding of the economics of global warming. If Canada can learn to implement this knowledge in a beneficial way, …show more content…
Furthermore, As Canadian medicine improves so does the average life expectancy of our citizens. With this is mind, our current median age is 40.6. By 2050 it is expected to shift, seniors will start to live longer and people will have less children. This will require Canadians to better prepare for medical emergencies in the event of dramatic climatic occurrences due to global warming. One of such weather events, which will become more prevalent are heat spells, droughts, flooding to say the least. These will create a dynamo effect, possibly endangering the health of Canadians everywhere. This unpredictable weather will be injurious, and every province affected. Since every province and region of Canada is geographically unique, each location will experience different weather; Especially Ontario. This is scary because it is the most populated province in Canada, and its problem is largely due to it being the second highest greenhouse gas emitter in the country. Ontario emissions were 171 Mt in 2010, an amount that represented 25% of Canada’s total emissions that year. “Due to our latitude, global warming is occurring faster in Ontario than the global average; while the average temperature around the world went up by 0.75 degrees Celsius in the past century, average temperatures in south-central Canada increased by an average 1.2

According to Pope Francis, the issue on “climate change is a problem that can no longer be left to a future generation.” He wants America to use the innovation and leadership to “avert the most serious effects of the environmental deterioration caused by human activity.” Pope Francis wants action and the cost of this will lead to an American family spending about $700 to $1,100 more a year. He says that there is a moral case for addressing climate change and “ the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concerns and affects us all.” If Americans find a better way to conserve resources and energy cheaper, then the costs in the economy will be less.…

No matter your viewpoint on the issue, you must recognize that humans have had a major impact on our surroundings since our time on earth. Climate Change is caused by greenhouse gas emissions, in particular carbon. 40% of Canada’s emissions already come from Alberta alone, not counting the entire tar sands infrastructure across North America nor counting the projected increase in tar sands production or the infrastructure built across the continent to accommodate such increases in production. Factor it all in and you get the picture. You haven’t even burned the petrol yet (Timoney,…

Climate change is a very significant, yet controversial environmental issue that has come to societies attention in recent years. Studies have shown that climate change causes negative environmental changes such as destruction of ecosystems, frequent droughts, and increases in global sea levels (Heath & Gifford, 2006). Although there are many studies that show evidence of climate change and the negative effects it has on the environment, there are still people that refuse to believe that climate change is a real and occurring issue. The following paper will begin by outlining the current federal climate change response policies in Canada under the Trudeau government. The mitigation and adaptation responses that have been practiced at the federal…

Again, there are also positive effects that climate change could bring to Canada, such as the increase of farm and agriculture production, and global warming could also bring the benefits of a warmer region to the health of Canadians. The Canadian government is already setting regulations and rules district wide, in order to lessen greenhouse gasses in the environment. They are also investing towards Canada in an effort to lessen the number of changes made by global warming, as well as investing in Canadians, in attempt to lessen the impact of climate change. In addition, more than 23.5 million people would be homeless in the deltas of the Ganges River in Bangladesh, the Mekong River in Vietnam, and the Nile in Egypt if there was a one metre rise in sea level. Recommendations to the government to try and reduce the effects of climate change are first, Canada putting a strong price on these greenhouse emissions so that industries in Canada are encouraged to try something new and find a new greener way to produce their goods and services. Another way Canada can prevent the most dangerous impacts of climate change is by investing in infrastructure, which includes mass transit such as high speed bullet trains. This can help reduce the use of fossil fuels. In summary, Canada needs a climate change plan which considers the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions and cutting these emissions from them.…

Since the beginning of time, Earth always had a cycle of cooling and heating. Right now, the Earth is going through another heating process. However, this heating stage, now known as global warming, had already begun since the start of the industrial revolution near the end of the 19th century. This revolution caused human activities to produce a lot more concentrated greenhouse gases, more than we have ever produced in our Earth’s history. The industrial revolution is when we first started to use power-driven machineries to create and produce items.…

Anup Shah, author of GlobalIssues.org states in his article discussing climate change, “The United States plus a few other countries, and many large corporations, have opposed climate change treaties seemingly afraid of profit impacts if they have to make substantial changes to how they do business”. However, these people do not realize the rude awakening they are in for once the earth starts to fix itself. Bryan Walsh, author of various pieces on climate change, states in his 2015 article entitled “Obama Takes the Lead on Climate Change but Needs the World to Follow”, “The Clean Power Plan is a start, even a historic one. But when it comes to a superwicked problem like climate change, as Obama himself said, “there is such a thing as being too late.””…
