As the name suggests, situational, this is an occurrences whereby peoples basic necessities of life are temporarily not meet as expected. It is a situation whereby “people living in poverty for a short time as the result of circumstance (unemployment, chronic illness, disability, divorce, or death of a family member),” or environmental disasters such as earthquakes, floods, erosion. Concerning the above, Odesola recognizes the fact that environmental factor contributes to situational poverty by quoting Ola Ayankeye, that “many Africans depend on land for sources of income but erosion has become a serious problem because the poor are lacking capital and are unable to invest in traditional methods to conserve soil and water.” In addition, Ayandokun …show more content…
Spiritual poverty is evident in Jesus’ presentation of the parable of the rich fool, Jesus says “…. This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich towards “God “(Luke 12: 21). In Jesus’ statement above, to be rich or poor towards God is not physical neither a material matter. However, to be poor or poverty towards God is the absence of the God factor; lack of consciousness of the existence and will of, relationship with and obedience to God. Conversely, the expression of being ‘lost’ in Luke 19: 9 – 10, is one kind of spiritual …show more content…
However, it’s spiritual poverty for those in the community of faith when they fail to observe what the Lord of the church commands. They follow not in consonant and obedience with God’s agenda but set and follow personal agenda to suit their purpose. Typical passages that talks on this includes: Not everyone who say to me ‘Lord, Lord; will enter the kingdom of heaven but only he who does the will of my father who is in heaven (Matthew 7:21), if anyone dose not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers: such branches are picked up’ throw into the fire and burned (John 15:6). Fruitlessness is also described in Revelation 2: 17- 18 saying, ‘you say I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white cloth to wear, so you cover your nakedness….). Christians have the desire to help the poor and go about completing this goal, but in ways that are unfair that actually ends up hurting the ones we try to help. Richards proposes the “living wage,” “fair trade”, “foreign aid”, and “government-run welfare” programs as examples where the intention is good, but the actual policy is harmful and increases poverty. I agree with Jay Richards, in order to fill peoples needs, we must learn the “art of economics” and have a mind for the poor, not just their hearts. Also, complying that if want to solve a difference in poverty, we must resolve long-term hope for the poor, no foreign aid, no charities, no government interference, but to have access to the free market economy where people can be inspired to build…

During the 1450’s to 1700’s, there were many poor people around in Europe. There were two main views of the poor in Europe, and those were that poor people were just lazy and didn’t deserve help or that it was a duty to help those in need. Many of the documents we had to examine are from France, but there was one document from England that really stuck out to me. I also believe that a majority of these documents support helping the poor, and what I’m going to focus on in this essay is how these documents emphasize giving to the poor, distinguishing who is really poor, and Add other point here.…

He boldly states, “we are and affluent people living in an impoverished world. If we make only ten thousand dollars a year, we are wealthier than 84 percent of the world.” There is almost a sense of guilt rather than conviction involving the issues of possessions. The author goes further when he implies that the rich man, in the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man, was condemned simply because he was stingy, not because he was not of God and showed that through his stinginess. Continuing on, he implies the rich man who met Jesus was condemned for his stinginess rather than the fact he was idolatrous towards…

In reality, people today “fear and abhor poverty, obscurity, and humility, and we seek to avoid them by all possible means,” but we don’t easily embrace and appreciate what we have (Calvin 41). Sometimes what people have available to them all the time, like water, is taken advantage of. As to what the Bible has offered, people are to trust that his grace and “blessing will find a way to make [people] happy and prosperous” (Calvin 41). The Bible has a mysterious way of involving multiple types of emotions that are closely related to how people feel today, yet it is also a word and calling of…

Lupe stated, “I’m the one who’s supposed to provide for them, and even if I have to struggle, ill get them something, be it only one of those clay whistles—they’re cheap…”(Arugeta 10). This is a perfect example of knowing there is little she can do with her life has given her but accepts what she has as and not what she doesn’t. On top of living in poverty most people were being brainwashed with beliefs and ideas because they were simple fixes to problems they faced; making them believe death was a gift from god, which made them feel separated from their true emotions. “The priest would tell me to keep the faith, and that if the child were not saved, it would be because of someone’s carelessness… We couldn’t do anything, only accept; it was God’s will. Sometimes we didn’t even cry over our children”(Argueta 21-22).…

Ronald J. Sider writes a compelling and thought-provoking book about affluent and wealthy Christians in a world that is getting increasing needy. One of his chapters covers the topic of economic relationships among God’s chosen people. After reading the chapter, I was surprised to see several differences among the Jerusalem church and the twenty-first-century church. I discovered that the early church was much more generous with their money and resources and this challenged me to think critically about my own personal wealth and how the community of wealthy believers are using their money. Sharing of money and wealth can be seen as early in the law but it wasn’t until Jesus’s time that the sharing really began and was lived out.…

The dangers of concentrated wealth can be found throughout many stories in the bible, especially in the gospels. Christian scholars view the gospel as the most important conversation between God and humans. In the gospel, we find the good news and the stories or sayings from Jesus’ life. The stories of Jesus’s dealings with the poor are numerous throughout the bible and the gospels. In one story from Mark, a man asked Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”(Mark 10:17).…

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate my understanding of how the Biblical text directly and/or indirectly relates to wealth, poverty, and economic justice. Starting with the second creation story found in the book of Genesis to Martin Luther King, Jr’s last sermon titled, The Drum Major Instinct, this paper will explore how the absence of loving self unselfishly fuels social and economic injustices that have plagued humanity since the fall of Adam and Eve. On January 6, 2018, a friend sent me this quote from an unknown source, “The woman you’re becoming will cost you relationships, spaces, and material things. Choose her over everything.” After reflecting upon the words, I sent her this reply, “Learning to love self in an unselfish way,…

The Broader Context: The Gospel of Luke In order to best understand how to properly interpret Luke 16:1-13, it is best to first read the passage in light of its surrounding context—the entire book of Luke. In his introduction, Luke clearly states his purpose in writing this gospel: “so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught,” (Luke 1:4). This is Luke 's purpose statement, but what is the truth the Luke is trying to demonstrate? The main theme Luke wants to convey, this “exact truth,” in his gospel is that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messianic Servant to all humankind.…

Christianity became a social and economic unifier by eliminating money from the values and instead preaching goodness and charity. The wealthy, pursuing heaven, responded by donating much of their money and valuables to the Church or directly to the lower classes. The Church gained wealth and prominence and the large gap between the classes became smaller and smaller. In the Gospel According to St. Matthew, he writes that you should “Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you” (The Gospel According to St. Matthew, 69).…
