There is no exact cause that was found to cause Wilms tumor. Scientists tried to find a link with environmental factors that the baby might have been exposed to in their mothers' womb, but failed to do so. However, there are many genetic factors that were found to increase the risk of being diagnosed with this type of cancer. Some of these include WAGR syndrome, Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS) and Frasier syndrome. In all three of these cases, there is a link between the syndrome and the mutation of a gene called the WT1 (Wilms' tumor 1) gene found on chromosome 11. Usually this gene acts as a tumor suppressor, where it can regulate and control the development of tumors. Its absence will increase the risk of cancers. Other risks factors or causes
