Over 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage and industrial waste are dumped into US water each year. Because of this, about 40% lakes are too contaminated for aquatic life, fishing or even for swimming in America. It’s disappointing how every eight seconds a child dies from drinking contaminated water. Also, it hurts how thousands of marine creatures die by swallowing plastic bags thinking they are jellyfishes. Terry Swearingen once said, “We are living on the planet as if we have another one to go to.” Even though pollution is affecting the world and our future, it is still being ignored. Like the word itself, reuse means to use more than once. Why buy something you already have? To create a new product, lots of materials and energy are required. Raw materials are taken from the earth, the product is being manufactured and then taken to where it will be sold. Reusing things like a water bottle or a plastic container can help save natural resources, can help save money and also protect the environment. Reusing things can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions; this means it will help with global warming. There are many ways to help reuse things. You can donate most things. Some examples where reusing things may take place would be “Salvation Army” or “Good Will.” People donate things and they sell them cheaper. Not only donating help the environment, it also helps people in need; the profit made is sent to those who truly need it.
The last R is recycle. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) reported that as of 2006, there are about 8,660 recycling programs. They also reported that 75% of the American waste is recyclable yet only 30% of it is being recycled.
