One of the world’s main concerns today is conserving the environment, and pollution is one of the main culprits for its continual destruction. Pollution only seems to be getting worse though as more and more toxins and wastes fill the earth and sky; damaging the environment that all humans and animals call home. People say the main culprit for pollution is industrial waste, and they are not wrong. But what they probably do not know is that half of the time, pollution is produced by the production of items we use every day, food packaging, plastic bottles, detergent, and electronics name a few. Recycling protects the environment by reusing old paper to reduce the amount of trees that are cut down. Again, industrial waste is the main source of pollution. Recycling industrial products cuts out a huge amount of pollution. Recycling has many other benefits besides protecting the environment and reducing pollution. It reduces energy consumption, global warming, and the amount of waste in landfills. Recycling is also judicious and promotes sustainable use of resources along with creating green jobs. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that, “green goods and services accounted for 3.1 million jobs in the United States by 2010” (Advantages and Disadvantages in Recycling). Despite all the benefits of recycling, there are some drawbacks, and again, the big opposition to recycling is that it does not pay. “Recycling most materials is a costly and cumbersome undertaking, at least in the beginning, and it has been difficult for communities to recover the costs quickly” (Recycling: is it worth the effort?). It is expensive in the beginning because towns have to build new recycling plants and buy new trucks to pick up recycling bins.
