Importance Of Environmental Awareness Essay

Decent Essays
The world is a beautiful place filled with great wonders, filled with immense wildlife, with peculiar plants and forestry, with wonderful oceans, and most importantly and yet the most beautiful thing, human beings. However, human beings have caused immense damage to the earth through many years of environmental abuse and exploitation of natural resources; however, even though humans have been able to slowly destroy the earth, it seems as if not many know how to help the earth recover. Many humans do not know that driving a car for a long period of time can cause up to 20 pounds of CO2 emissions, or that the three Rs- reduce, reuse, recycle- can make a huge difference due to the awareness it creates and most importantly because it helps to try and limit the destruction or over exploitation of fossil fuels. In short, one of the many ways to help the earth is by creating environmental awareness. Environmental awareness is a way to promote the well-being of the earth, environmental awareness is a way to explain the benefits that simple things like recycling can do, and environmental awareness is a way to communicate to the real world what to do in order to make a difference in the fight against environmental abuse.

The United States consumes more natural resources than any other country in the world and over the years has acted almost recklessly in regards to the state of the atmosphere. We are, as a nation, so wasteful in regards to natural resources that, despite being the world’s largest producer, we are the world’s greatest importer/buyer. Appiah expresses his thoughts by saying, “It's not as though we're unaware of what we're doing to the planet: We know the harm done by deforestation, wetland destruction, pollution, overfishing, greenhouse gas emissions—the whole litany.” Movements like the Green Party have begun to try to combat the harm being done to the environment and to educate the public in hopes to change the attitudes and mentalities of being environmentally conscious. If the environment of the future is destroyed, we will be held accountable which is why change must begin now.…

“Isn’t it ironic how the earth would thrive without us, [humans], but we would not survive without the earth?” Yet, we still manage to choose non-sustainable products and lifestyles regardless of its repercussions in our habitat because it is more convenient way to live. It is undebatable that nature is a beautiful thing, and when it is destroyed, unlike various things in the modern world that can be easily replaced, we can not replace nature. Over the course of the semester, we have discussed the negative consequences resulting from the way we, as a society, dispose of our garbage. Most of our trash generally ends up in landfills where harmful chemicals are washed off exposing surrounding areas to harmful pollutants which are then able to cause extensive damage to both the environment and the species which inhabit the area. This method of waste disposal, while convenient for both major businesses and individual civilians alike, has already proven detrimental to the planet and its many species, and has called for a change in the way we manage and dispose of these toxic materials. “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” answers that call by providing a number of feasible solutions and changes we can make, not only how we discard our trash, but also how we can avoid the need to create any more.…

As Americans continue to live prosperous lives, we diminish our natural recourses and environment around us. We will not understand the importance of our Earth until it’s too late. Although I believe if we were more aware of the dire consequences we would alter our lifestyle; starting with the little things for example, turning the faucet off while brushing our teeth, recycling more often, and picking up trash we find on the ground. As days pass by we continue to ignore the warnings from our scientists and the signs around us.…

Maybe I’ve read too many popular young adult novels that feature futuristic dystopian societies where civilization is forced to survive in an environmentally decimated world or listened to too many debates on global warming. Regardless of the cause being real or imagined, we cannot deny that the polar ice caps are melting, weather patterns are shifting, trash is mounting and the earth’s natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate.…
