Environmental Analysis Of Vernacular Architecture

1. Introduction
As we advance in the field of building science and technology, we are increasingly becoming aware of the need for a more sustainable building development. Energy use being the number one contributor to global warming, about 50% of energy is used in buildings, indicating that buildings have a considerable potential for operational energy savings.
Climate responsive design provides a comfortable indoor environment in response to the seasonal variations of climate, the direction of the sun, natural shade provided by surrounding topography, environmental factors such as wind, rain fall, humidity, and climate data to design comfortable and energy efficient structures that use little to no-energy.
In recent years, more and more environmental

As such, vernacular architecture is widely recognized as a practical, effective and popular solution to the energy consumption dilemma, being an already existing and tested approach to climate responsive design.
Vernacular architecture is a term used to categorize methods of construction which use locally available resources to address the local needs. Vernacular architecture results from long-term growth and is part of traditional popular culture; therefore, vernacular architecture is considered well adapted to the natural and social conditions of a specific location in which it exists.
Inhabitants of an area often employ and use various adaptive features in their houses to keep the indoor conditions within comfortable zone. Their techniques are time tested, and therefore it can be understood that they would have developed methodologies that more properly approach the climate of the area, providing cool conditions during the summer and warmth in the

The structure my group and I made was an Urgent Care Clinic in a kibbutz located in the desert. This structure is well suited for desert environment because it has 4 giant vents on each corner. These vents transfer the hot air of the desert into cooler air so that the patients and workers inside do not feel very hot. One of the ways our structure reduces cost by using technology is that at night, if it's cold outside, we have tubes under the floor to heat up the room. These tubes last 200 years and use less energy than any other heating system.…

Rhetorical Analysis: More Green from Your Green Building One thing most people can agree on is that we as a planet need to improve our sustainability and hopefully save money in doing so. People often think about carbon dioxide omissions or melting ice caps but one of the most useful ways to improve is by focusing on the buildings in which we live! While having a code to keep us safe is helpful for people, having a green construction code can help the Earth. Benefits apply to almost everyone including the owner, the occupants, and even the whole environment around it. “Implication of the International Green Construction Code” written in Construct! magazine by William Kelley Jr. and “Getting the Greenlight” written by Mike Thomas in Green Building and Design magazine writes about ways in which green building can positively affect those in connection with the building.…

In the article "Viewpoint: Air Conditioning Will Be the End of Us" the author Eric Klinenberg builds an argument to persuade his audience that Americans should reduce the use of air conditioning by showing ethos, logos and pathos. He also uses several other strategies, including the use of factual examples and comparisons. The author describes how he received a letter from his utility provider advising him to use air conditioning "wisely". In fact, Americans use so much air conditioning that they "use twice as much energy… as they did twenty years ago, and more than the rest of the world's nations combined.…

The past, present, and future all make up the history and the prospect of a future beyond futures with constant, everlasting, infinite innovation and ingenuity in a city off the coast of France and England known as Tout le Temps. This city encompasses the ways of life and culture of both France and England with both French and English as the main languages and a population of approximately 220,000. It’s located on an island in the midst of the English Channel and is about 350 km2. Tout le Temps has a history going all the way back to the 10th century BC and it has pleasant weather almost all year round in the way that it most of the time isn’t too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter with few events of extreme weather. The island is relatively flat all around with a couple of hills every now and then, but nothing major, which allows easy transportation.…

Our readings, so far, have not only been interesting but have, in fact, touched upon history in a way I did not expect. That unexpected brush with history through the medium of architecture, has broadened my ideas about not only architecture but also Native American society itself. Let me begin by pointing out that when I’ve conjured up the idea of architecture in the past, that idea never included Native American housing. Through the misconception of my youth, I envisioned that style of housing as strictly utilitarian and slightly mobile and nomadic. Of course these functional attributes are elements of architecture, however I had not contemplated them in that manner before.…

Weather is something that the world faces on a daily basis. The art of weather forecasting began with early civilizations using reoccurring astronomical and meteorological events to help them monitor seasonal changes in the weather (Griffin, 2005). During the 1800s, weather observations began to grow and expand across the United States (Uccellini, 2015). During the 19th century weather observations from distant points could be rapidly collected and analyzed at one location (Uccellini, 2015). The 20th century brought a lot of improvements to weather, some of these things I will mention in my paper.…

Written by Eric Klinenberg, in July 17, 2013, “Viewpoint: Air-Conditioning Will Be the end of us” is an article from the time Inc., that argues how Americans abuse the use of the Air-Conditioning system when the heat goes up. Klinenberg argues in his article that every American whenever the temperature rises to a high heat in their city instead of using the Air-Conditioning wisely as there as suppose to the crank it up to cool down every room in their house. In his article Klinenberg demonstrates how nothing has changed in all this years while using the Air-Conditioner. He states that “Today Americans use twice as much energy for air-conditioning as we did 20 years ago, and more than the rest of the world’s nations combined” (Klinenberg). Klinenberg, makes a good argument on how the Air-Conditioning can be harmless to the environment, however his extensive use of pathos shows that his argument is based on his feelings on the environment.…

BUILDING SERVICES AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE Student no: 3318911 • Human thermal comfort is ultimately dependent upon six simple parameters that can be easily measured and assessed for any individual in any particular environment. This allows us to design buildings within which all occupants will be thermally comfortable. The aim of a building, either dwellings or commercial buildings is to offer shelter and a different climate from the world outside . One of the factor to consider to build a favourable place to work or live is the thermal comfort.…

Ecological design is a major part of our coming future and is necessary for the prosperity of our species as caretakers for the world. Sim Van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan, in their book Ecological Design, address five principles in design that will help to move society in the right direction. These principles are: solutions from your place, ecological accounting, designing with nature, everyone is a designer, and making nature visible. It has been over the course of the last century that building designers and engineers have neglected the entirety of environmental impacts that went into their buildings. They have built, I believe, from a strictly human perspective with regard only to what the majority wants.…

Many people think that since the Industrial Revolution humans have been destroying nature. In Wendell Berry’s, “Getting Along with Nature” Berry goes into detail about the defenders of nature and their enemies. Berry believes that people cannot live without nature, but not like the complete wilderness. People also don’t like a totally human environment either, an equal balance is needed. Which comes from the start of the industrial revolution, and because of this, there are the conservationists.…
