This essay discusses the concept of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and how it differentiates entrepreneurs from small business owners. A definition of entrepreneurs and small business owners will be given, along with the differentiating characteristics of both. In addition, entrepreneurial characteristics play a part in the success of start-ups. Thus, the positive and negative relationship between self-efficacy and performance will also be discussed.

‘Entrepreneurial self-efficacy’ is a characteristic that entrepreneurs have. The definition can be broken down into two parts: ‘entrepreneur’ and ‘self-efficacy’. “Firstly, an entrepreneur is as a person who owns or starts a business or an organisation.” (Katz & Green, 2015, p. 4) This is one

Entrepreneurs are always innovating and growing the business. To be a successful entrepreneur with a successful and growing business, one must posses several crucial characteristics, one of them being ‘entrepreneurial self-efficacy. “An entrepreneur would take opportunities whenever they can. They are also restless and easily bored.” (Blackburn, Hart, & Wainwright, 2013, p. 14) And this relates back to ‘entrepreneurial self-efficacy’. This is because the restlessness and boredom from the regimented everyday routine of running the business sparks ideas and innovation. This brings fresh new ideas to the business to rejuvenate the customers’ experiences while maintaining the business’s values, mission and …show more content…
“Self-efficacy was negatively related to subsequent performance when the performance or task was highly ambiguous.” (Tims, Bakker, & Derks, 2014, p.492) This can happen when miscommunication between management and the team happens and goals of tasks are not clearly defined. Employees are more motivated to work when the purpose is identified. “Assigned goals influence personal goals through goal acceptance and commitment, and serve to establish normative expectations around which personal goals can evolve.” (Applebaum & Hare, 1996, p. 40) Where there is no specific goal to the tasks allocated, an employee may not want to engage with the tasks as they feel lost and the purpose is unlcear. Meaningful or purposeful work is often more satisfying than that that has no clear goal. This is because the actions are known to be done for a good
