Many agree that the key to success in South Africa is entrepreneurs. The lack of entrepreneurs in our country effectively using the vast amount of resources and in turn creating employment and raising the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is definitely apparent. It is clear there needs to be an increase in entrepreneurship through increasing awareness of entrepreneurial orientation. Subsequently awareness of entrepreneurial orientation would lead to greater implementation of entrepreneurial activities, and as entrepreneurial orientation is key to new entry, increasing entrepreneurial activities could assist in the growth of the South African economy. ENTREPRENEURIAL ORIENTATION IN DEPTH
Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is essentially the procedures, techniques and decision making activities that are the starting blocks to new entry. EO is one of three important development components in the model for entrepreneurial development (Maasdorp & Van Vuuren 1998). It is facilitated by a distinctive combination of factors, namely culture, family and role models, education, work experience and personal orientation.
The culture factor of EO refers to the influence cultures seem to have on entry of an organization. South Africa is known to have numerous cultures with different customs. There is a considerable number of South Africans who are rural occupants who lead mainly underprivileged lives. In the more rural areas, there is a culture where women stay home, make food and look after the children. These are traditional roles where woman are not expected to make something of themselves, therefore the country is missing out on hidden potential. Improving EO is able to be done and should be done, it is not a fixed concept and with a greater EO more individuals in organisations will have the skill set and confidence to pursue their dreams of starting their own business with many employment opportunities. Additionally, these new business ventures will have a greater chance of success and endurance. This will result in a higher real GDP and lower unemployment rate, thus improving our economy.
