Task Oriented Leadership Style

If the task motivated leaders are mainly concerned with reaching the common goal, then relationship motivated is more focused on building the relationship as well as the communication within the team. According to Burns (2014:271), there are 3 leadership styles developed in contingency theory, basing on the degree of freedom or control for the staffs. Authoritarian style is where the decision-making power focus solely on the leader. In the crisis time, authoritarian can be the most appropriate style. According to this theory, effective leadership can be taught and learnt. Therefore, its purpose is to study and understand what the leaders do. There are two main elements of this approach, which are concern for people and concern for results, performance. Therefore, the leadership styles are classified into two different categories: task-oriented leadership and people-oriented leadership. Task-oriented leaders are more focusing on the structure of the organization, the management of the organizational procedures as well as performance. With this leadership style, leaders still take the people element into consideration but it is not their priority. With this leadership style, leaders are usually concentrate on activities like organizing, initiating, clarifying and information gathering. In contrast, people-oriented leaders will prioritize the relationship within the team. They will focus on their behaviors to ensure the effective communication as well as the level of satisfaction of the team members. For this leadership style, leaders achieve the organizational goals in different ways while taking the human relationship into great consideration. These leaders favor behaviors like encouraging, observing, listening, coaching and mentoring.
