Entrenched Sexism Analysis

Traditionally, the importance of the role of women in society has been greatly overlooked. In patriarchal societies, women are often seen as lesser than their male counterparts. In recent years, there has been a noticeable trend in which women have greater autonomy as is exemplified through the wider spectrum of roles and positions that they hold. However, underlying the superficial surface are cultural values that are difficult to change. Therefore, I believe that the story “Women’s right campaigners pin hopes on new Taiwan leader Tsai to address entrenched sexism” is a relevant topic that would be important for the SEAS program participants to explore and understand as it affects Southeastern Asian culture in its entirety. The meet-up can be conducted in a discussion style. During this meet-up, the women can talk about the current conditions of the country in terms of sexism and gender inequality. They can be asked about how they feel about the election of Taiwan’s first female president and what they believe it can hold for the role of women in society in the future. The women can give an insight into their lives and subsequently what they stand and are fighting for and are hoping to change through activism. Furthermore, some of the women can show parts of their everyday lives to the participants to illustrate what is expected of them in their gender-biased society. Therefore, through looking into the lives of women in the society, learning what type of roles and power they hold within their household and in society, the SEAS group can receive an insight illustrating their country’s subsequent culture and
