All of our lives, we place ourselves higher on the food chain than every other animal out there. Humankind as a whole treats nature far worse than it would ever treat another human being – or so we hope. Throughout the two films, Project Nim ¬- directed by James Marsh - and “The Paw Project” – another documentary that was posted by YouTube user “The Bat Vegan” – we are a witness to harmful treatment done by acclaimed scientists. “The Paw Project” touches on the realities of declawing all types of cats while Project Nim takes us on a journey as a group of hippies tried to humanize a chimpanzee in the seventies. Though they address an overall topic, what makes each of them unique in how they present their information, defend their actions, and draw the audience in to believe any of their actions are warranted?…

After Al-Qaeda’s attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, the United Sates felt it time to punish those responsible so as to ensure another attack would not be forthcoming. The CIA began “enhanced interrogation of detainees”; in other words, the torture of people believed to have information about the enemy. Here, I examine the reduction of a human being who lived a bios life and became a detainee whose life changed suddenly to zoe and therefore became homo sacer. The life of an individual who is homo sacer is that of zoe or bare life, that life which is common to all animals. Giorgio Agamben states that “it indicates, rather, a life that may be killed by anyone-an object of a violence that exceeds the sphere both of law and sacrifice” (pp 86).…

In his towering essay “Ideas of Nature,” Raymond Williams examined the dynamic relationship which humans hold with nature – a relationship which involves histories of intervention, separation, and domination – to investigate “whether nature include[s] man.” The dominant narratives which emerged from this debate suggest that nature* is wholly separate from human; contemporary discourse argues that nature is intrinsically where industry (and in extension human activity) is not. But what happens when nature becomes industrialized? Moreover, what happens when mechanized intervention invades the pastoral, a realm seen historically as natural? Building from Williams’ line of inquiry, I seek to question two practices which widen the rift between humans…
