Hot packs and cold packs are a useful item when it comes to treating injuries. Inside a pack is salt and a certain amount of water. When you break the pack, the salt mixes with the water causing a reaction that either increases or decreases the temperature. When these salts dissolve in the water it creates a reaction that is either endothermic or exothermic. Endothermic is the absorption of heat. This is when the pack gets hotter. Exothermic is the release of heat. This is when the pack gets colder. The enthalpy of dissolution for these salts determines rather they can be used in the hot or cold packs. The enthalpy of dissolution is the measurement of energy released or absorbed when a solute dissolves in a solvent. Calorimetry is the measurement of heat flow. In our lab the Calorimetry measures the amount of heat flow needed to increase or decrease the temperature of the cold or hot packs. A Calorimeter coffee cup is used because allows for constant pressure while also measuring the change of heat (∆H) as the salt dissolves inside the cup. Our team has been given four salts by the Ache Away! Company to see which ones would work for their hot or cold packs. Our purpose is to determine which salt is best suited for the production of cold packs and hot packs. We will do this by identifying which salts will increase or decrease the temperature of the packs. In addition we also need to know the unit cost of production per cold pack and hot pack to figure out which is the cheapest to
