Entering Law School

Life's transitions are funny, frantic, and fantastic periods that always require some level of guidance. Entering law school is one of those transitions. And, I would say, so is being introduced to the Bluebook, which is an experience that is occasionally funny, frequently frantic, but always fantastic. Wanting to give back to the GW Law community by providing first-year students with guidance through those two tumultuous transitions is why I am interested in becoming a Dean's Fellow. As a resident assistant at my undergraduate institution, helping my forty residents navigate the start of college was my daily responsibility. I was tasked with teaching my residents about our school's rules as well as enforcing those rules. Additionally, I was required to plan events that would continue my residents' educations outside the classroom. I was also responsible for assisting them when they blew a fuse in their dorms or "loss" their desk chairs. Both of them were excellent at guiding my LRW group through our transition into the Bluebook. They took the time during our class periods to really work with us through the complexities of using the Bluebook and they reminded us the significance the different skills we were developing in the citation classes (and LRW) would have in our legal careers going forward (which is important when you have just spent fifteen minutes discussing the significance of italicized commas). But, in my opinion, Sydney and Corinne were successful Dean's Fellows because they were willing to provide us with advice on anything law school, legal profession, and even just generally life related we may ask about. Their willingness to help guide us not only through our transition into the Bluebook, but also the transition into law school really made them invaluable resources for my

There were numerous times I helped a distressed family member find a room, doctor, resources, or even just talk to them because they were going through some very challenging times. To remain calm, be respectful, listen actively, and try to fix any issues or find someone who can be a better aid to them. These skills were not just relevant in the hospital, but also in life. As I accumulated over four hundred and thirty hours at the hospital, I solidified my aspirations of becoming a doctor. Talking to the residents, I realized most of them had similar undertones in their message.…

While interviewing Dylan McKinnon, a second year law student at the University of Iowa, I gained knowledge about the subject field and domain of law school and how it prepares students to emerge into the law field after graduation. I found Dylan during his office hours in the Pappajohn Business Building on the third floor on Friday afternoon. His office was poorly decorated with the only item on his desk being a laptop. The room seemed much too big for the minimal space that he was using but the artlessness mimicked his simple, but insightful answers to the interview questions. The room was grey and most likely could not be changed, a rule of the business college.…

Living on campus is an opportunity that all students should have the ability to experience; however, in a safe and wise manner. I am not saying that the residents should be parented and told what to do every waking hour; however, informing them of the risks and hazards of drug and alcohol consumption can be key. This will enable them to make safer and more informed decisions while in situations involving these substances. At the beginning of the school year there can be a mandatory drug and alcohol program in the residency hall, and this program can consist of a short individual survey, handouts, and a speaker from …(the people that you never showed up to your…
