Traveling can transform someone. The sights people see while traveling not only influence them in the moment, but the information they discover about themselves- how to interact with other individuals in society or how to carry themselves in situations-can influence their everyday life after their trip ends. People learn what they are capable of and have more confidence in themselves when they come back from their trip. They learn new attributes that help them positively interact with people who they don’t see as extremely similar to themselves whether this is by the way they conduct themselves in society or solely their personal behaviors. Enrique, in Enrique’s Journal, traveled from Mexico to the United States with minimal resources. He hopped trains, outran and hid from bandits (sometimes he was beat by them but lived), slept in the littlest corners, and starved for many days. A bartended broke a few glasses and they cut my leg. People told me that I did not need stitches but I knew that I did. Not only did I need to manage myself and make sure I got the adequate assistance I needed, but also I did what I thought was best and choose to tell others a semi-different story than what happened. I did not want the bartender to get in trouble. Even though it made sense for him to pay for my stitches, he was trying to create a future for himself by saving money to open his own bar and good jobs can be hard to come by in Mexico. I was also in the position that I could pay for the medical care so overall I would pay less than he would have. I also did not want him to feel bad so to make him feel better I told him that now I have a cool scar and story to go with it, and that it could be worse. This act helped me realize how other people can be effected by someone else’s action. I now feel that I acknowledge people’s emotions more so than before my trip. This experience helped me look for the positives in every situation and I now that I am home, I have found that I continue to have that same attitude
