Fundamental Changes
Traveling can transform someone. The sights people see while traveling not only influence them in the moment, but the information they discover about themselves- how to interact with other individuals in society or how to carry themselves in situations-can influence their everyday life after their trip ends. In Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, Enrique embarks on a journey to the United States to find his mother. In return he learns how to manage himself and what he personally needs to survive in a situation where resources are minimal and dangers lurk everywhere. A trip I took to Mexico with my friends this summer changed me similarly to Enrique, however not so drastically. I learned how to manage myself in a foreign

People learn what they are capable of and have more confidence in themselves when they come back from their trip. They learn new attributes that help them positively interact with people who they don’t see as extremely similar to themselves whether this is by the way they conduct themselves in society or solely their personal behaviors. Enrique, in Enrique’s Journal, traveled from Mexico to the United States with minimal resources. He hopped trains, outran and hid from bandits (sometimes he was beat by them but lived), slept in the littlest corners, and starved for many days. Even though he was miserable most of the time, if not all, he learned how to handle himself and what he needs to survive. At times he had to interact with people he was not used to or who he had no desire to talk to such as smugglers and drug lords. Out of necessity however, he learned how to deal with these people in a productive manner. Then when he was settled in America, the people he talked and the situations he was in were not such high stakes as on his trip and the interactions that took place were more relaxed because Enrique had learned how to deal with …show more content…
A bartended broke a few glasses and they cut my leg. People told me that I did not need stitches but I knew that I did. Not only did I need to manage myself and make sure I got the adequate assistance I needed, but also I did what I thought was best and choose to tell others a semi-different story than what happened. I did not want the bartender to get in trouble. Even though it made sense for him to pay for my stitches, he was trying to create a future for himself by saving money to open his own bar and good jobs can be hard to come by in Mexico. I was also in the position that I could pay for the medical care so overall I would pay less than he would have. I also did not want him to feel bad so to make him feel better I told him that now I have a cool scar and story to go with it, and that it could be worse. This act helped me realize how other people can be effected by someone else’s action. I now feel that I acknowledge people’s emotions more so than before my trip. This experience helped me look for the positives in every situation and I now that I am home, I have found that I continue to have that same attitude

At the beginning of Chapter 5 in Enrique’s Journey has has successfully made it to the boarder of the United States between Mexico and Texas. At this point he is on the Mexicans side trying to find out a way to cross the Rio Grande River. He talks about sharing a “soiled, soggy mattresses with three other migrants.”…

The main theme in this book is the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child. Although Enrique barely has memories of his mom and has only talked to her on the phone a handful of times in the past ten years of his life he still feels the need to be with her. The passage that I pulled from the book as the most important and meaningful is a short dialogue between Enrique and his mom. At this point in the book Enrique has just crossed the border into America and the smugglers that got him there called his mom and said that they need more money.…

As soon as we arrived in Ecuador, our family members were waiting for us at the airport. They welcomed us and it felt like meeting them for the first time. This goes right back to the positive thought processes that I have talked about a couple of times this year in the other exercises. There is definitely powerful about changing your perspective on things and really pulling out the positive in a negative situation. People always say, “it is all about you attitude,” and I agree with that statement 100% of the time. I think that your attitude affects the way you think and react to situations. When you restructure your thought process to pull the best out of the worst, not only will you be a much happier person, but you will also alter the way you receive and remember that…
