An example of how cruel humans can be, is when they burned the angels side with branding steers to make him stand. Many could find the act of branding him as brutal. Everyone is guilty of discriminating against the angel. Marquez illustrates, “even the most merciful threw stones at him”(221). To have the merciful to throw stones, shows the angel was seen as a threat. The angel did absolutely nothing to any of the townspeople, yet everyone see’s the angel as a menace. The townspeople would not have treated one of their own this harshly. Both the townspeople and humanity share the trait of …show more content…
The humiliation the angel must have felt is absolutely dreadful. If the angel was young, powerful, and magnificent, he would have been treated differently. However, the angel is old and dirty, so many could understand why they would persecute him. Many may feel that they treated the angel like this because he was different. The arrogance of the townspeople resulted in the suffering of the angel.
One example of symbolism in the story is the Sea. The Sea is where the story begins and ends. The sea can be seen as endless in the way that the angel flew away and became no longer visible. Elisenda said, “she kept watching until it was no longer possible for her to see him, because then he was no longer an annoyance in her life but an imaginary dot on the horizon of the sea”(225). The angel may have been an annoyance to the family, but they cannot deny all of the good he brings. The sea was the angels escape from humanity. Humanity’s cruel nature is the reason why the angel

The two stories “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez had undertones and themes which related to humanity and philosophical viewpoints on human nature. In the story Metamorphosis the theme of adaptation when a constant is changed are presented through a newly changed family. Compared to this the short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, expresses the themes of greed, and how when the opportunity arises people will turn to exploiting things and people despite how immoral it may seem. Although these two stories vary, the prominent theme of childhood ignorance and maturity is executed between these two literary pieces. The story Metamorphosis portrays a theme that parallels the…

Barton provides detailed and carefully deliberated comments regarding the spiritual focus of the gospel of Mark. His attention to the obvious motifs in the gospel seems to be legitimate. While he does use the Gospel of Matthew to give illumination to Mark, I believe he did a masterful job at using the Markan episode to advance his thoughts. In terms of how this plays out in the life of the church, Barton’s work provides a rich array of relevant topics and themes for preaching in the contemporary church. I found his section on the emphasis on “following” to be most helpful.…

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings “He had to go very close to see that it was an old man, a very old man, lying face down in the mud, who, in spite of his tremendous efforts, couldn’t get up, impeded by his enormous wings” (356). In Marquez’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” we sense the general idea that people tend to challenge what they don’t understand. This is vividly conveyed in the conflict that exists between the story’s protagonist, the old man, and the society he stumbles upon as well as through the use of symbolism of the chicken coop throughout the story.…

The wife and husband tie him up in there chicken coop and charge the townspeople to see this new attraction. I believe the people in the story did not want to believe maybe this could be an angel because then they would have to think about maybe my life is a whole lie and there really are angels and it would totally confuse them. We normally think of angels as elegant with nice hygine and maybe blonde hair. So the people of the town didn’t want to believe this dirty old guy who they had thought could have been a old norwegian guy with a strong accent…

“Of the Churl who won Paradise” is a story that can be related to “The Resurrection of Jesus Christ”. The Resurrection of Jesus is Christian belief that after he died he rose again from the dead to wash our sins away. Most of the time, we question ourselves, If I die today, will I got to Heaven or Hell? That answer remains unknown because we do not necessarily know. People does not understand that we are on this earth for a main reason.…

They “intelligently concluded that he was a lonely castaway from some foreign ship wrecked by the storm” because they thought he had “an incomprehensible dialect with a strong sailor’s voice.” Only a few scenes later in the story, Father Gonzaga makes an assumption about the old man with wings based on the way he speaks as well. He decided to speak to the angel in Latin, what he assumed to be the language of God. Because the old man did not understand what the priest said, the priest had “suspicion of an imposter,” meaning there is no way that this “creature” was an angel.…
