Identity
Magic Realism appears when a character in the story carries forward to be alive ahead of the normal length of life. Also where magical or unreal aspect of a natural part in a different realistic environment and character, fracture the rules of our real world. Characters that are portrayed as magical or surreal has a statement that is behind it. An example is Gregor in the Metamorphosis, and not only did he turn into an bug but he sent a larger message about human experience. The two stories, A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings and the Metamorphosis, both have a symbolic mean to identity. Before Gregor was transformed into a bug he felt at least somewhat happy. This is when Gregor knows he had lost his identity to his mother. Instead of his mother noticing the “brown blotch” as her son, she first acknowledges Gregor as a useless bug and all she has to say is for her to exclaim in fear. All who was left to Gregor was his sister, Grete. She was the only family member that contained interaction with him. This soonly resulted in a downfall when she exclaimed "You, Gregor! cried his sister with raised fist and piercing eyes. These were the first words she had addressed directly to him since his metamorphosis.” (2.26) Grete refused to call this bug “Gregor” and insists that the family will dispose of him. Later in the story, Metamorphosis, is not told in the perspective of Gregor. He dies and finally loses all identity of being known as the son of Mr. and Mrs. …show more content…
When the old man appears, Elisenda and Pelayo plan to kill him, but Pelayo is unable to do so. He shows compassion. They benefit from the man, but do not appreciate his existence. He loses all identity of who he is. The old man becomes a “circus act” and was sold for money. “Then [Father Gonzaga] noticed that seen close up he was much too human: he had an unbearable smell of the outdoors, the back side of his wings was strewn with parasites and his main feathers had been mistreated by terrestrial winds, and nothing about him measured up to the proud dignity of angels.” (5). The community expected too much from an angel. To contain well hygiene such as not being pesky and not having mundane problems; like having body odor or fleas. The old man was not seen as being a
