The serpent steals the plant form Gilgamesh, even a snake wants eternal youth so as other people. If he actually brings back the plant, not only that he couldn’t become young forever, he might get killed by others. The reason why he didn’t go back to Utnapishtim and asked for another plant is because he becomes more mature and he accepts that death is unavoidable.
God set up a series of tests for Gilgamesh to overcome such as Enkidu, Humbaba, and Ishtar

Everyone wants eternal life and become perfect; but if you think it another way imperfection is perfection, doing meaning things in a limited lifetime, human’s desire is unlimited and intense. If we live forever, then we would never learn to cherish what we have and we would try to conquer more and more which would cause suffering in our lifetime.
