Enhydra lutris has beautiful fur that looks fuzzy and cuddly. Its attractive fur was a major target for hunters for a warm coat (Lafferty, 2015). A study has revealed that Enhydra lutris population decline was enormous and was rapid after the Pacific maritime fur trade was initiated. The pacific maritime fur trade was fur trade system that mainly concentrated on furs of Enhydra lutris. In addition, about one million Enhydra lutris were hunted to near extinction due to the Pacific maritime fur trade. As a consequence of the loss of Enhydra lutris, it was recorded that sea urchins population increased and kelp forests were deforested.
