Data was collected at various points throughout the match; enrollment, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and again at 12 months. At enrollment, the mentee’s parents were required to fill out paper work asking for basic demographic information as well as socio-economic status. The collection of this information provided a more complete understating of possible factors affecting match length and match quality. Match length was assessed by the length of the match in months over time. Likewise, match quality, was generally assessed by the mentor’s strength of relationship completed survey.
Similarly, we assessed strength of relationship between the mentor and mentee using an eleven-item survey on a five point Likert scale (ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree). For increased validity, the survey was primarily administered to mentors at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months by the Match Support Specialist at BBSHR. The survey sought to capture the mentor’s perceived strength of the relationship with their Little. DuBois and Neville (1997) argue that mentoring programs were largely time limited, issue focused, group oriented, and implemented by trained professionals such as counselors, psychologists, or teachers. They also argue that well-run mentoring programs result in only a "small benefit" for the average child, and poorly designed programs that do not adequately train or screen mentors can be harmful, especially for children who have experienced neglect or abuse. They furthermore state that these at-risk youths need more counseling than an untrained volunteer can typically provide. Such children are often hypersensitive to their mentor's actions and may feel abandoned with little or no justification.…

The reasons that first-year students do not return to college as a sophomore range from family issues to lack of friends and loneliness to struggling academically and lack of money. Results in this study showed that six themes related to mentors’ perceptions of their roles of serving: mentor qualities, intensive time commitment, caseload, involvement in multiple contexts, close relationship with youth, and challenges. The roles and their challenges described presented that their roles as mentors are intensive, involved, and demanding. The study concluded, as the results indicated, that a mentor who uses a professional, experienced mentoring model may hold promise for working with youth at high risk. The role, the conceptualizations, and the organizational culture of the mentors’ work may be important in…

In order for graduate level nurses to become a good leader, mentoring is very important. Grossmen (2012) describes the definition of mentoring that, “mentoring in nursing encompassed a guided, reciprocal, formally or informally assigned over a mutually agreed-on period that empowers the mentor and mentee to develop personally and professionally within the auspices of a caring, collaborative, culturally competent, and respectful environment” (p. 28). Mentoring is required to ensure the development of future nursing leaders and Mentoring bridges the gap between education and real-world experience (Tracy & Hanson, 2014). Mentors have been defined as being competent and self-confident, having qualities that epitomize success in their own careers, and having the ability and desire to help others succeed (Hamric, 2014). Mentoring relationships can be developed based on specific needs of the APN mentee (e.g., writing for publication, developing professional presentation skills) or on the general development of career and leadership skills.…

Good mentoring leads to action: if mentoring is to be purposeful and effective for the mentee, it must surely not only define actions desirable but actually entail their execution. The mentee must not only know what to do and how to do it but be motivated to do so. For this reason mentoring should not be terminated before action has been taken; and may lead to it being measurable or valued, by its…

In today’s ever connected and fast-paced world, Generation Y, or Millenials, born between the early 1980’s and the mid-1990’s to early 2000’s are a generation unlike the world has ever seen. Raised by the Baby Boomers who were influenced by Vietnam, Watergate, and were “idealistic” in nature, Millenials are perceived to be motivated by time off who value individuality and have low company loyalty (Montana Office of Public Instruction). But, when trying to connect with them on a coaching, advisement-type role, how is this best accomplished? A report by ICEF Monitor proclaims that people most successful in this endeavor “don’t dictate or shout, but empower and leave control in the hands of youth” (“How to connect with today’s youth:…

A union compared to a foretaste of heaven.” The author, Gary Thomas, focused on Matthew 6:33 as a good example of purposely striving for God’s best and finding a blessed marriage.
