Reflective Essay In My English Writing Class

When I moved to the United States, I was only sixteen years old, and beginning my junior year in high school. I come from Dominican Republic, where the native language is Spanish. In my country most of the young citizens learn the basic of speaking, and writing in English. For example, my friends are able to understand, and interact with a movie in English, even if the movie does not have subtitles in Spanish. I have only been studying English for two years, and I successfully completed high school in the United States. However, in the two years I spent learning English, I encountered many struggles within writing, and speaking English eloquently. The three times in which English has caused me most difficulty were at presenting in my AP Biology course, completing essays in my English writing class, and when I went to Macy’s in order to return my prom dress.
In my AP Biology course, the professor had a meticulous method of teaching their students the material of the book. The method of the professor was to make their students to teach the class through the action of presenting a PowerPoint every day. There was a PowerPoint for each chapter of the book.

In these specific moments, I face struggles with the language of English because I was not able to write, or speak confidently in English. Therefore, I learned that it’s not how you start a journey; it’s how you finished the journey. In other words, there is always room to improve upon your writing, vocabulary knowledge, and speaking skills. I personally believe that every person have different backgrounds, weaknesses, and strengths, which will facilitate their learning of a new language within a minimum amount of obstacles. Every person has the power to fight struggles with determination and hard

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

After finishing the English 101 course I feel like I have accomplished many of the goals that I was challenged with the beginning of the course, such as critically thinking and reading with text from the textbook “Dialogues” by Gary Goshgarian, substantively replying to my peers to understand their point of views from the text and to get a better understanding of a rhetorical argument. Thinking and reading critically were very important this whole course. Thinking and reading critically were something you would have to do in every assignment that was given. Incorporating it in every assignment has helped us greatly improve week by week and betters our understanding of each topic and the assignments main idea.…

Learning to write When I attended elementary school, part of the curriculum was penmanship. There was a certain segment of instruction dedicated to penmanship rather than writing. We were given large sheets of oat colored paper with three parallel lines widely spaced. The alphabets were used to print and write in cursive using the midpoint, and upper lines for capital letters. The handwriting grades were based on neatness and readability.…

No matter where you go or went to school, you always have some type of English class that forces you to write papers. These papers usually has to be a certain way or over a certain topic. To me that was a pretty big problem for me because I could do free writing easy, but when you tell me to write about something that I don 't have any interest in and I have to follow your “rules”, then I will just try to blow it off. I have always hated the way Professors and the world had this “image” of their version of a “perfect” essay. I always messed up on the rules like where to put my commas or semicolons, that to me is the hardest part to not have a run- on sentence.…

Thesis: Coming here as an international student, I faced a great challenge in language barrier, and illegal immigrants are experiencing the same difficulty; that is why, although the United States government’s policies toward immigration change over time, I support current actions to be easier on undocumented immigration. Why I am here? I decided to study in the U.S because of its superior education system, compared to Vietnam’s. The education system in Vietnam is very obsolete, and uninspiring.…

Self-Assessment. I do not have much writing background, and writing never been my favorite activity. Previously I took an English Composition class in Hocking College therefore this was my very first time I had to write an essay in English language. As a middle aged women, out of school for 20 years and English as a second language, I felt a little nervous before research skills class, and I probably have a disadvantage compared to the other students in this class who are fresh out of high school but I believe that a good challenge is important for our personal growth and I welcome any challenge that comes my way.…

Throughout taking the course WRIT 1500 this semester, I feel that my writing has improved immensely. I have always struggled with planning an essay and writing it but taking this course has helped me improve my writing skills. One example of a struggled I experience is creating a thesis. For example, my first essay’s thesis stated, “The use of narration, description, and cause and effect rhetorics shape the authors essays to create stronger pieces of writing”. The requirement for the first essay was to find three important rhetorics that were used throughout the essays we read.…

Originally, coming into this course from having taken AP English (allowing me to skip English 101), I had an embarrassingly false sense of security about my writing. Although high school was valuable, as it taught me how to concisely put my thoughts together and make a cohesive essay, I was often writing rhetorical analyses or synthesizing given sources – nothing like English 102 required. I was conditioned to write in very limited periods of time with barely a second to look back, which was a bold contrast to the reflective manner of college writing. I’ve discovered that taking time to revise (and reflect, and revise some more), in combination with peer reviewing, learning how to better develop my opinions into objective, convincing arguments, and acquiring the skill of researching and implementing sources to support those arguments…

Having Spanish as my first language made school a challenge for me. I was placed in a bilingual class in the 3rd grade. Many newspapers write about how immigrants learn new language, and what challenges they face. Everyone is different which means that everyone has a different learning style. Some people learn best by reading/writing. Also, some people are hands on learning which means practicing the language. Two years ago when I first came to the USA, I learned English by having conversations with my coworkers, and my friends, through different internet sites, and going to Northern Virginia community college, all of which wasn’t easy but helped me to have a better life.…

What would you steal if you can steal someone's ability? For me, the enviable abilities to steal are not Logical-Mathematical or Kinesthetic, but it is an ability that makes my life easier whether I am in any corner of the world. It is Linguistic intelligence, the ability that I want to have since I was a child until now. Looking back to when I was a little girl, no one around me speaks English except the German uncle next door. He is the first person who introduced me to know the other languages besides my own mother tongue.…

Have you ever tried learning English by reading a dictionary? I was a four-year-old immigrant that knew nothing about the English language and culture and it was all I could do.
