Personal Statement
Tristan Hines, Mexico, English Teaching Assistant I have felt like growing up in a small town hindered my capacity to explore different communities with unique perspectives. My experiences were limited to my town and the same people for most of my life. By the time I entered college, I was starved for opportunities to expand my horizons. My studies in Spanish and International Studies turned my desire to learn about the world into a passion for International Relations. After studying the complexities of cross-cultural exchanges, especially between Latin America and the United States, I felt compelled to engage with the global community through various volunteer opportunities. Now that I am graduating and entering a new stage

While in Spain, I participated in the Tandem program and taught English as a second language. The Tandem program paired volunteers with different native languages to have regular conversations with each other. Outside of the Tandem program, I tutored elementary children to teach them English. Both experiences allowed me to improve my Spanish while engaging with different people in the Spanish community. Back at home I stay involved by volunteering with Justice for our Neighbors Immigration Clinic and the Kids on Course Program. In the Kids on Course after school program, I teach local Hispanic children Spanish to account for the lack of Spanish programs in elementary schools. While at the Immigration Clinic, I help fill out intake forms and translate for Spanish speakers. My practical experiences are among my most coveted because they have taught me the importance of communicating between different languages.
My background in International Relations and Spanish coupled with my time abroad have prepared me to fulfill the Fulbright’s mission. I have had many different forms of teaching experience and I feel more than capable of fulfilling my role as an English Teaching Assistant. I respect and encourage the celebration of cultural differences and have seen how these differences affect the classroom. Being bilingual has opened many doors for me and I would like to share that opportunity with others. The Fulbright is the continuation of my path in pursuit of my

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Rodriguez grew up in a Spanish speaking family thriving and eager to expand his education and vocabulary in the “loud, booming with confidence” English language. According to Rodriguez, bilingual educationists have strong disbelief in the idea that schools should be assimilated with bilingual education because the students lack “a degree of ‘individuality’” This sense of individuality is absent in public society because often your heritage sets you apart from most others around you.…

During the 1960’s several factors allowed very little opportunities to bring back bilingual education (Baker,2001). The Bilingual Education Act of 1968, has been one of the most important act throughout the history of Bilingual Education. This past summer I was accepted into a volunteer program in La Alberca, Spain. There, I spent 10 days with Spanish students in my age range improving their english communication skills. Receiving the confirmation for this experience excited me but in the rear of my mind lived a huge fear of flying then living across the world for two weeks without my mother. Conquering the fear of traveling alone to a foreign country and having the experience volunteering was both an obstacle and enlightening experience in my life and has influenced my growth into young adulthood.…

As a person who has been passionate about global and cultural issues from a young age, I feel that it is my destiny to work with the U.S. State Department. Since the age of 10, I have studied foreign societies, demographics, geography, politics, and history. As a homeschooled high school student, I learned Spanish language and literature with my grandfather who emigrated from Cuba in 1959. This experience connected me to my heritage and inspired me to broaden my knowledge and understanding of Latin and world cultures. At Holyoke Community College, which I successfully transitioned into as a 16 year-old homeschooled student, I worked with classmates in an Interdisciplinary Politics and Spanish course to pursue a multifaceted approach to learning in line with my personal studies of geography,…

When I first began learning Spanish in middle school, it was by obligation. At the time, there was no need for me to know any other language beside English. Everyone around me was white, and no one spoke anything other than English. It wasn’t until high school that I realized the power of knowing another language. Speaking another language allows you to communicate with entirely new communities -- to hear their problems and experience their way of life.…

I am thinking about a career in the performing arts and/or literature and journalism once I get out of high school, and thought that this would be a good place to start learning and getting experience. I love writing, as English is one of my best subjects. I have won numerous literacy awards at school, and spend a lot of time just creative writing. I am really interested in writing about all the wonderful events that go on in this town and I defiantly want to get involved and immersed into what this small town with big ideas has to offer. I was hoping you would consider letting me write a test article about the upcoming homecoming event this weekend, so I can submit to you a piece of my work to…
