Synthesis Essay On College English

Before entering English 101, I was not sure what to expect in my first college English. Teachers from my high school would tell all of their students that in college the papers would be up to 30 pages long and that the professors would grade very hard. English is a subject that I have never been too good at so, coming into college English I was very nervous. I have struggled in the past to perceive the correct tone and organization in my writing. That was my main focus from my first paper, the synthesis essay, to my last paper, the RBAA essay. My synthesis essay, “World Plagues,” analyzed essays about plagues during two very different time periods. “World Plagues” explained the different recourses that were available and how people handled the epidemics differently during each time period. My RBAA essay, “The Issue of Sexual Assault in the Military,” …show more content…
I’ve seen the large impact that sexual assault has on the military first hand. I entered basic training only about two years after the Lackland scandal. In order to be fair with opposing views in my RBAA, I included information about what good the military was doing. I explained how the Air Force spends a large amount of time during a new enlistees training process devoted towards training in sexual assault prevention and resources that are available. I also read a lot about the issue and the multiple ways that the military was handling it. Everyone has their own point of views and I wanted to see as many as I could before I started writing my essay. My synthesis essay was different because it was more factual as oppose to argumentative. This essay used the evidence that the authors had given rather than me created my own ideas. I simply took their essays and elaborated on them to describe the differences of the time periods. A large aspect of not sounded too autocratic is doing the outside research and provided the proper

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

Dear University of Alabama Academic Community, The first part of this semester was nothing like I imagined English 101 would be like. Since I did not write many papers in high school, it was a struggle for me to challenge myself as a writer. In the beginning it was nerve racking and stressful as I wrote, but as time went on it started to feel more natural. For class I have written a summary of Henry Wechsler’s, “Getting Serious about Eradicating Binge Drinking,” and discussed the Pros and Cons to his article in a response paper.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

This English 101 class has helped me in variety of ways in gaining and shaping skills in writing. I learned how do compose several types of essays including: professional, informal, casual, cause and effect, and argumentative and was given the format for writing these. Every week, the class was given one of these types of essay to write and throughout the class periods, I would start and finish them. I saw that if I outline these essays with key points of my topic before I officially being writing the first draft, an essay is not difficult to come up with. I would only have to include transitions, which I also learned, and maybe a few more sentences to make my ideas connect properly and flow smoothly.…

From the time I started English 101, I had no idea how a paper was really supposed to be written. I struggled in English 101 because going from high school to a college course was totally different. The teachers were stricter and the essays were to be graded in a more sophisticated manner. But since I was able to better myself as a writer in English 101., it helped improve my essays in English 102. I was be to give more details and more information than before I started my First year Writing Program.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Sexual assault is an epidemic in the military that isn’t being controlled; “according to the U.S. government, in 2012, there were 26,000 sexual assaults in the U.S. military-almost 35 percent more than in 2011” ("Sexual Assault: A Stain on the U.S. Military"). That number is still raising today. The stats show that what the military is doing about sexual assault is not working. It needs to go further than simply training military members and telling them that it is bad.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

English 101 taught me how to be more creative and broad about writing. Example on Essay 1 I didn’t really mention anything about Sonia Sotomayor’s mother not wanting her to work, and behind that was facts and important information about he context that I missed. I also approach my assignments differently now; I make sure my paragraphs are structured in the write order for an easy read for the reader. I realized when I start off with a good approach on a topic I have to tools and skills learned in class to expand ideas and write a solid piece of writing to read. I did also realize that I am bad to start off with, I haven’t seemed to find that spark to start me off right, so I guess that’s why they call it a shitty first…
