English Support Essay Examples

English Support. Those words haunted me throughout my adjusting semester of eighth grade. From A’s to C’s and D’s, my English grades converted into flashing red warning signs of my need to get help. My enormous ego and stubbornness stood in the way; they didn’t step aside to let me see that the English Support class was what I needed. I got this, I thought. Man, was I wrong. After a claustrophobic and torturing student led parent-teacher conference, realization hit me in the face like a truck and I―myself―made the decision to enter the English Support class. Once enrolled, our next essay, for the dreaded English class, was on Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. I imagined English Support as a room filled with cubicles, where people sulked and every second dreading their load of paperwork. However, we listened to the formal middle aged teacher dragging on about what a comma splice was and how to avoid it. Turns out, it wasn’t like that at all. In the class, we followed along with the reading of the book. We discussed the importance of events and put into practice marking the book with thoughts, questions, reactions. I was constantly defending my writing. I was and am a decent writer, but I am by no means Maya Angelou, Gabriel García Márquez, or Michelle Moran. I know what my weaknesses are as a writer and what I need to improve on. Even now, I am making grammatical mistakes. I am probably even making some punctuation errors. I am definitely having some awkward sentences scattered around. This is why I have many people look over my essays and papers.
