English Subject Analysis

Overall, I find English to be my favorite subject because of how genuinely interesting many aspects of it are to me. I like to look deeper and find hidden meaning below a passage that at first glance appears to be stale and I take great pleasure in improving my writing skills along with learning literary devices. Finally, I believe very strongly that not only am I capable to handle the workload of Honors English and excel on in class activities, I would also be very grateful for an opportunity to learn more in depth and to be challenged in subject area that I already enjoy.

The American Dream means that with hard work and a little luck we can be anything we wanted to. Amy Tan, the author of “Two Kinds”, seems to say that although Jing-Mei’s mom can be bossy, she probably does this to help her daughter succeed. In this short story, “Two Kinds”, the main character, Jing-Mei Woo, also known as June, is forced by her mother, Mrs. Woo on learning how to play the piano and be the ultimate best. Mrs.Woo doesn’t really give Jing-Mei a choice, she wants to be able to brag about her daughter's “natural pride”. However, this makes Jing-Mei wants to shut down her mom’s dream of having the perfect daughter since she’s not really good at playing the piano.…

If I had to choose a favorite subject, English would be at the top of my list. I am no perfectionist, although English is my preferred subject. I still lack many qualities that make an exquisite writer. I’ve been in school for approximately three weeks now and English is one of the many subjects I am taking. Luckily the professor I chosen is very nice, knowledgeable and adamant about the subject he teaches.…

While the idea is interesting, and the light, humorous writing style is appealing, there are many philosophical questions and treatises that the narrator brings up that come across as disjointed and disconnected. Moreover, there are a multitude of grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the piece.…

In English 101 this semester I have learned numerous things that have strengthened my literature skills. It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

On my first day of college I was incredibly nervous about multiple obstacles I was about to face. One of my biggest worries was how I would manage to pass a college English class. However, when I walked in the classroom and saw my old high school classmates Jace and Lauren, I became a bit more comfortable. I was also relieved to discover that the class was very small and the teacher was not scary at all, unlike my prior belief.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

Overall, this course has exposed me to many new skills that I can implement in later English courses, as well as others like Bioethics, for example, where it’s heavily influenced by having the ability to think beyond one’s own viewpoint. My major, Environmental Public Health, will likely involve situations where I must efficiently convey my ideas and back them up while appealing to important audiences. Public speaking will also likely play a large role in my career, so I feel that English courses condition more concise, developed thinking. Most of all, though, I enjoyed getting to use topics I’m passionate about, and originally found that to be a daunting task since I had previously always been told what to write about. But now, it’s liberating being able to translate a passion into a convincing argument through rhetorical strategies that may later promote change and…

Given Korean does not exhibit overt definite and indefinite article forms (“the” and “a” / “an” respectively) in its syntactic and semantic properties, mastering English definite and indefinite article usage in ESL acquisition for non-native Korean speakers (NNS) is a challenging task. This topic of article usage variability has received great attention from researchers since it is a salient linguistic feature in non-native speakers (NNS) English. The difficulty of English article production attributes to the low production rate of English articles in NNS writings, as compared to that of native speakers of English (NS). This study investigates and analyzes how L2 learners’ L1 grammar has influences on the article production rate and the syntactic patterns associated with it. A qualitative and quantitative study based on corpus linguistics analysis revealed that a corpus of NNS students’ academic writings shows significantly lower production rate of English articles than that of NS.…
