A Reflection of Learning in English 111
As a high school student taking online college level courses in order to successfully pass a great deal of work ethic is necessary. Online courses in general are difficult for students due to the students’ success being mostly dependent on the student and not the teacher. In order to turn in the assignment by the deadline, students are required to plan out when they intend to work on assignments this in addition to the fact that it is a college level course. The expectations of a college level course are different from what is expected in a high school level course. Within a college level course, there is a focus on evaluating sources in depth to determine how reliable they are, while in a high school

The first challenge I faced was overcoming the idea that journalists who write for well-known companies can have faults in their writing. When someone thinks of a journalist they usually imagine a journalist who exposes the wrongdoings of people, companies, and even the government. This thought accompanied with the fact that I enjoy reading the news and usually read it every day if not at least every week, made scrutinizing a published article prove to be a bit of a problem. However, with the analyzing of the article and analyzing articles within and outside the classroom, I have improved my ability to look at an article and more and less determine the majority of its faults. Within a week of completing the assignment the next assignment was another news media critique but on an article of choice. When comparing the previous assignment to this assignment the amount of improvement can easily be seen. In the first assignment I could barely write a paragraph, but in the next assignment I was able to write an over 1000 word essay. Both assignments made students carefully scrutinize an article(s), however, as I previously mentioned it was difficult to do. I also had a lousy handle on MLA …show more content…
I shifted from my main argument later in my essay rather than staying completely focused on my argument. In a much later assignment I also had to argue but I was able to stay on topic and I did not shift my focus like I did in my first argument. I researched in depth and included many sources for my minimum wage argument, unlike previous works where I only had one or two sources. I expanded my use of sources, therefore, creating a more well rounded and researched paper. Also, with controversial topics such as the minimum wage nearly all sources have a bias. With the use of multiple sources, I could cross reference statistics and facts to try to ascertain which were true and which were not. This is something I had never done before with any of my essays and it proved to be time consuming but also useful when making an argument. Within an argument there is a an expectation that what you are saying is true and that what you are arguing for is better than the opposing stance. I was not aware of the biases I had but this class has made me more aware of those thoughts. A considerable amount of attention to the wording is necessary considering that without looking for those biases they can ruin the reliability of an analysis or a paper. My use of the MLA format has certainly increased, its important to properly format a paper. Without proper format, the reader is more likely to have

What new ideas I have been learning in English 111 so far is how to the use rhetorical devices more in writing my papers, and notices them as well when reading. Before beginning this course, I knew that I lacked confidence within my writing. People say that you are your own worst critique, and I fully agree with that statement. My writing was not terrible in some aspects, but I knew that it needed to be improved upon. I lacked the experience needed because writing was not something that I did on a daily basis. When I first started English 1302, the little confidence that I had significantly plummeted since my writing seemed childish compared to other students.…

Probably the two biggest things I’ve learned from taking English 1010 is summarization and citation. At the beginning of the class, I struggled with not trying to make my summaries sound like lists. As I kept practicing, I learned how to reflect my writing style and voice into my summaries, while still being able to effectively get the point of the original source across. I learned how to add citations to my writing when quoting or paraphrasing a source, something of which I did very little in my writing before I took the class. English 1010 is also the first class where I have written a full length literature review concerning a discussion around a certain topic.…

Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Writing and reading have always come easy to me in school; whether reading to write a book review for the class or reading for the AP exam, I have excelled with high honors and the highest remarks from the faculty on my writing and style. English has always been one of my best subjects. Most of my english teachers were pretty impressed with my writing skills and with my advanced vocabulary for my age. My 9th grade english teacher even thought that I should get into writing, whether as a blogger or as an journalist.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

English 1101 is a course aimed to prepare students for their future writing courses and have the necessary skills for writing college level work. Coming into this course I was hopeful that it would improve my general writing skills since throughout my secondary schooling it was acceptable but not exceptional. My current faults are hindering the comprehensiveness of my writings because readers have to sift through the damage to understand the argument and focus of the topic. While I am able to come up with content my inability to logically put it into a written form is something I intended to improve. After this course I hope to have revamped my former weaknesses so I can be a more clear and cohesive writer for the future…

Learning different modes of writing and putting them into practice will allow me to be able to approach different subjects with an appropriate style. Although I had learned to use only academically credible sources before, I had become too lax and this class put me back on the right track of being aware. I have only done papers in APA format for the past two years, so this class was a nice refresher on MLA format. I think it’s important to be fluent in both; while in college you never know if different teachers will require a different format than others. Beyond improving my writing ability, this class achieved its critical thinking development goal as well.…

Sports debate is a hobby that I am most passionate for. A reason I am so fond of this hobby is because it includes two of my favorite things: sports and arguing. I constantly find myself tuning into ESPN to watch ESPN first take or Fox Sports to watch Undisputed. These two sports debate shows take up most of most mornings as I would sit watching the art of oration between two well prepared candidates. Unlike sports debate, writing papers was not one of my hobbies.…
